Twitter and Facebook serve our team well. The writing community which we serve has grouped on these two platforms, with the younger crowd leaning more towards Twitter. Local discussions, event, etc are more successful on Facebook, while larger-reaching calls for submissions, etc. find greater success on Twitter. (Overall, however, we prefer email marketing, which clusters our more dedicated base from either platform into a single segment.)
