What's the difference between automated Hubspot email tracking & creating your own UTM parameters?

Would love to know the difference, pros/cons, user cases for choosing one option over the other.
At the moment my team uses a combination of the Hubspot automated source tracking for URLs in emails, eg:

utm_medium=emailutm_source=hs_emailutm_content=[email ID number]utm_campaign=[campaign name]

As well as individually created UTMs in the tracking & analytics section of the settings tab. I’d like to know primarily the difference between using each function, which is preferred and why.
We use Mixpanel for website analytics and it looks like it picks up both versions, so I wonder whether we’re just duplicating work by creating our own?

@cmccready,

I’m sure others may jump in here but, in my personal opinion, you are duplicating work if you are using HubSpot to email your contacts.

If I was using another email tool and wanted to associate with a campaign in HubSpot, then, I would use the UTM tool.

Or, for ads, paid social, and such.

Usually, even 3rd party sites where my HubSpot tracking code does not live might be a good play for the UTM builder.

But, since HubSpot Email auto-creates them for me, I have never done what you are doing. (HubSpot user since 2012).

If you have questions, I’m all ears.
