I recently started watching some Casey Neistat videos, and he talks about the 3-act structure that he uses on most of his vlogs. It’s as simple as 1) setting the stage, 2) conflict, and 3) resolution. This video was from a few years ago, so I am sure that the ideal structure has changed, but I think it kept users engaged because the topic was broken down into smaller, digestible chunks, with other “transition” footage filmed in between.
Casey has a great structure to his videos which speaks to his popularity. I love the way he creates his videos in digestable content like you mentioned - thanks for sharing!
1. Tennis match play by “Essential Tennis” has a good structure; they start with a hook - a point that was worth watching before they hit with the branding and introduction. During the match they have cut-away commentary voicing whats going through their heading during the match - this would include what i could have done better, what will my next game strategy be and general trash talking. I also find that during the match they have commentary from the actually players (each person is hooked up with a lapel microphone) and this really makes the match more engaging. They finish the video with a ‘cliff hanger’, in this case Mark one of the players made a great passing shot and his oppentent got wrong footed and tweaked his ankle - they replayed it back in slow motion 3 times - this got alot of people commenting wishing him a fast recovery.
2. This structure made viewing a tennis match more exciting and realistic. I think this would be a great idea for professional tennis players to do when they are playing.
I can’t think of a specific example but I think starting with a short (10 seconds or less) hook that the viewer can relate to or they might need the answer to is good, quick intro to your channel and what this video offers, body of content, CTA, last bit of content, then sign off CTA.
I think his structure was effective in increasing engangement because he followed the new digital story arch - showing exactly what you will learn immediatley up front and then digging into the details later. He also used the segments to partition his video for those who may be scanning for certain segments.
I think Dude Perfect has a good structure to its trick shot and Bucket List videos (not so much Overtime). Mark Rober generally follows the same structure, minus the channel logo.
Hook --> Channel Logo --> Video Intro --> Main Content --> Conclusion --> Call to Action
I am going to name Merrell Twins again. Their way of making contents are a little bit different than any others. They use somewhat awkward moments to make subscribers relate to them, but in a natural way. Also they use special way to introduce themselves as well as all of their other channels and their merch as well.
