People receive monthly e-newsletters from us and also register for webinars.
From time to time I discover a handful of folks who unsubscribed from ALL mailings from us who decide they want to register for a webinar. They don’t get the registration confirmation or follow up because they unsubscribed!
Do I routinely delete people who unsubscribe after each monthly newsletter to prevent this from happening?
How do I tell people to manually opt back in when I see they try to register for a webinar?
Great question – unfortunately, the only actual solution requires a Professional subscription and an add-on.
A bit of background on subscribing and unsubscribing… Before sending an email in HubSpot, the platform checks whether there is a legal basis for sending that email. This check can be very strict (opt-in required, see GDPR settings) or loose (lack of an opt-out / unsubscribe). By default, most portals are set to the latter.
Some emails can move outside of these restrictions, these are called transactional emails. These are emails that one cannot unsubsribe from. Examples for transactional emails would be an invoice after a purchase, a contract update, or a confirmation after a webinar registration.
Sadly, this is not included by default in HubSpot. To transactional emails to unsubscribed contacts, one must purchase the transactional email add-on. (This requires a Marketing Hub Professional subscription, too.)
Without this add-on, you will simply not be able to send a marketing email to an unsubscribed contact. As far as workarounds go, these are the ones I can think of. (None of them are ideal.)
For important contacts, send a one-to-one email from your email client – either providing the actual confirmation in this email or letting the contact know that they have unsubscribed and must resubscribe.
One option for resubscribing is via the form itself, see here. The form will notice that a contact has unsubscribed and suggest re-subscribing.
You could evaluate marketing email tools that integrate with HubSpot. I haven’t played around with this but I’d assume that a third-party tool would not necessarily respect the HubSpot unsubscribe status.
- If they have unsubscribed from all the mailings, then you can make use of the subscription email from Admin settings.
- Once the send resubscription email is turned on, Every unsubscribed contact on filling out the form, will see an unintuitive bit of text (which is clickable ) and clicking that to be sent another email that contains a way of subscription link.
- However, it is a long way from resubscription, and has lots of chances that the contact may skip any of these steps. Hence an idea is also created to make improvements in this process. Idea for improvement.
I hope it helps!
Thank you.
