What advice would you give to someone trying to segment by contact list membership?

When creating smart content, you can segment a list of contacts and provide them with content that’s different from what the average visitor sees. This means that any time a contact on that list visits your website, they’ll see content that’s specifically tailored to them. What recommendation would you give to someone looking to use smart content by contact list membership? For example, what are the benefits, how would you go about implementation, etc.

Segmentation is a tool that helps your group or organisation divide up the contents of your database into smaller chunks (Who is financial? Who gave to last appeal? Who gave more than $50?), and then treat each as a separate audience in itself when it comes to your direct mailing.
These chunks are made up of people on your database or contact list who share a certain characteristic or characteristics.
The main aim of segmentation is to “divide and conquer” – by dividing up your database into segments, you can more easily target and “conquer” them through more focussed, more relevant direct mail-outs that appeal more personally to them.
Not only does this save your community group time, but it can also save money and increase the response rates to your mail-outs. Anything that can help to increase the response rate can help to save you money.
To bring segmentation into focus for community groups and organisations, this Help Sheet contains some useful examples of effective segmentation, and also some further tips on how best to segment your database or contact list.

They should segment the known visitors and track their activity path to form the smart content. This would help them in delivering different content to different visitors according to their preferences and interests. For the implementation part, one should form the buyer persona and start tagging their contacts.

To better support each user in their stage of the buyers journey

Segmenting contacts, supports getting the right information to the right person at the right time. One type of segmenting might be to include a zip code as a question if you were trying to isolate those customers from a certain area then provide specific details/availbility, etc to those that will benefit from the information.

Se debe tner cuidado con los filtros que se apliquen para la segmentación de las listas y antes que nada se debe comprender para qué sirve cada propiedad.

Assuming you have your list cleand and filled with contacts, you can then be most efficient in your use of smart content by segmenting your list. You can start this segmentation by targeting the largest possible group of people with common characteristics in your list first. Such segments to start with could be the buyers personas or targeting based on visitors activities on your website.

To target buyer personas for example, you have two options.

1. Create the list for the personas automatically on setting up the list. or

2. Create the list directly from the list tool by selecting Person = (your persona condition).

Note before you do this, you need to ensure that you have assigned contacts to the list.

To target base on visitors activity

Examing the past behavior of your visitors to decide how to build your segments. Maybe one group of your visitors watched your videos, another group downloaded your ebook and another requested your demo.

Then you can segment based on these groups defined above so that you can target the with specifice contents that’s tailed to their needs.

The benefit of segmenting by contact list is that you can more easily create a buyer persona for that contact list, which can be used to personalize the user experience based on list membership. Instead of trying to target everybody, you can be more specific about the context of the consumer, based on their segmentation. In order to implement, you would want to create buyer personas or each contact list.

And then we can use them to address the users individually(in groups)

Ask for zip code and create content tailored to their area. Such as from Washington DC could include-mention local sights to your site to let them envision how product could be used locally. Selling hiking equipment to someone in NH? Mention when you’re hiking in the White Mountains.
