I’m a wedding photographer, and I struggle with website / marketing bc my passion is photography…not tech stuff. Any other photogs / self employed creatives here learning SEO with me? My goal is to learn enough SEO that I can re-do my website and start ranking on Google---clients do find me, but I need higher volume of traffic for MORE inquiries.

There is a lot of bad SEO advice peddled by other photographers which is based on myths and false understandings of how SEO actually works. For example “blog every shoot” is terrible advice because it spreads link equity thin over time and your whole site becomes weaker as a result. The best think you want to do is keep a small, minimal and LEAN websites with just the basic core infrasturure (home page, service pages, location page, packages, about, contact…etc) and then stop there. Don’t blog like crazy and don’t think you need to ‘do all the things’. You only need the right minimal structure to compete. Make your homepage target your primary market (where you live) and use location pages to target secondary markets (where you travel to). Just be sure to keep it simple and don’t overbuild. I have constantly seen sites with 300-400 pages/posts of ‘stuff’ and they aren’t ranking for anything, meanwhile photographers with 10 page sites on Page 1 for huge markets like LA.
