Welcome to the Community @RHansson! You’re right that this should work automatically once everything is aligned. So the fact that your segment is empty means something in the chain isn’t matching up. I think that’s usually the subscription property/frequency, email status, or contact consent. Here are the most common issues to check in HubSpot for your exact scenario I found and put together for you.
First, make sure the subscription email is actually “on.” Even if the email is designed and “Published,” it must also be toggled Send: On in the Blog > Subscriptions settings. Check this here:
- Settings > Content > Blog > select the correct blog in “Current view.”
- Go to the Subscriptions tab.
- In “Blog subscriber notification emails”, confirm for your frequency (Instant/Daily/Weekly/Monthly) that:
- The email is Published, and
- The Send toggle is turned on (not off).
If Send is off, no segment will actively get notifications and nothing will send, even if the form is working.
Next, confirm you picked the right blog and frequency. Everything is blog‑specific and frequency‑specific. If any of these don’t match, the auto segment will stay empty.
In Blog > Subscriptions, make sure you have the same blog selected that your post is on. Confirm the subscription email you created is for the same frequency as what you selected on the form (“Instant” vs “Weekly”). Then open your form (Marketing > Forms > the “Subscribe to [Blog] Notifications” form) and check the Notification frequency field options. They must exactly match the live frequencies configured for that blog subscription (e.g., “Instant”, “Daily”, etc.), and you should have selected the one that corresponds to your email link. If the form uses a value that doesn’t match an active frequency, the segment based on the “[Your Blog] Email Subscription” property will not pick it up.
Now, check that the form is tied to the auto blog subscription property. HubSpot creates a special subscription form and property for each blog; the segments rely on that property: [Your Blog] Email Subscription (Language).
In the form editor:
- Open the automatically created “Subscribe to [Blog name] Notifications” form.
- Click the Notification Frequency field.
- In the left sidebar, confirm the underlying contact property is the blog’s own “[Your Blog] Email Subscription (Language)” (not a custom property you created).
- Make sure the field is required or at least has a default/pre‑selected value for the frequency you want.
If you replaced that field with a custom property, the automatic segment will stay empty because it only watches the system property.
Next up, verify contacts actually have the subscription property value. Since your form has submissions but the segment is empty, look at an individual contact who submitted. Here’s a step-by-step for you.
- Go to CRM > Contacts, open a test contact that filled out the form.
- Click “View all properties” and search for “[Your Blog] Email Subscription.”
- Check if that property has a value like “Instant,” “Daily,” “Weekly,” or “Monthly” for that blog.
If the property is blank, the form is not writing to the correct field or not mapping the option correctly. Once this property gets a value, the contact should appear in the “[Subscription] Subscribers – [Your Blog]” segment.
The last step for troubleshooting is to confirm the segment filters haven’t been modified. When HubSpot creates the blog subscription segment, it’s filtered by “[Your Blog] Email Subscription equals [frequency]”.
In CRM > Segments:
- Search “Subscribers,” open the auto‑created segment for your blog and frequency.
- Check the filters: it should at minimum include the condition on that blog’s email subscription property matching the chosen frequency.
- If you added extra filters (Lifecycle stage is Customer), those could be excluding your test contact.
Try temporarily removing additional filters and save, then see if your test contact appears.
I’d also think about email consent and subscription type. Because HubSpot respects email subscription types and consent, a subscription type is created automatically for each new blog. If your contacts are globally unsubscribed from marketing emails or from that subscription type, they won’t receive the notifications even if they appear in the segment. On the test contact record, check:
- Global subscription status.
- Whether they are unsubscribed from the blog’s subscription type (under “Communication preferences”).
Now a note on timing and existing posts. Depending on frequency, there are timing nuances. Instant sends 30 minutes after the post is published, and only if the email was already ON when you published. Daily/Weekly/Monthly sends based on the schedule you set in the email’s Schedule settings and only if a new post falls in that window. Also note that when you turn on a blog subscription email, HubSpot can send for posts published within the applicable time frame (last 12 hours for instant, or within the period for other frequencies). If you published before turning it on, your test post may not trigger anything.
Try: Publish or update a new test blog post (or adjust the publish time) after the subscription email is definitely on, then wait through the delay/schedule.
Hopefully that helps! You could also call in or chat with Support in your portal (the ? in the circle in your top navigation bar).
