Unable to change Companies field type

I tried to change field type in Company but receiving below error

This property’s field type can’t be changed because it is used in 2 assets.

I have removed the 2 unused Forms but the error message persists. Have anyone experienced this and how to solve this?

Thank you

Hi @FCA,

Even if you’ve deleted the forms, HubSpot won’t let you change the property type until all assets using that property are removed — and that includes things like workflows, lists, reports, and even stuff in the trash.

Go to Settings > Properties, click on the property, and check the “Used in” tab to see where it’s still linked. Clear it from everything listed, and make sure no records still have values for it. Then you should be able to change the field type.

If that’s too much hassle, it’s sometimes quicker to just create a new property with the correct type and start fresh.
I hope this helps,

Jess

Hi @FCA,

The type of a property can only be changed if the property is not referenced or used anywhere. That means:

  1. It must be removed from all forms, lists, emails, workflows, reports, views etc.
  2. For any record in your system, the property must be empty.

It sounds like you took care of 1, but not 2. (To confirm, please share a screenshot of the “Used in” section in the property settings for this property.)

To take care of the second point, I’d recommend the following:

  • Export your company records from the company index page, make sure the field you want to change is included as a column: Export your records
  • Bulk edit the property and clear it for all companies: Bulk edit records
  • Change the property type in the property settings
  • Re-import the file from step 1 (you need to map two columns: Record ID and the field you want to change)

Keep in mind that there are certain default properties the type of which cannot be changed. If you could confirm which property you’re trying to update, I can check.

Sometimes, it’s easier to create a new property of the desired type.

Best regards!

@FCA I get you, that one can be super annoying.
Even after you delete the forms (or whatever asset it says is using the property), HubSpot sometimes still “holds onto” that usage behind the scenes — like it hasn’t fully disconnected it yet. It’s not uncommon, especially with older forms, reports, or workflows that once referenced the property even if you’ve already cleaned them up.

Here’s what usually helps:

  1. First, double-check ALL assets — not just forms. Go into the property details, and click “View property history” or “View usage” (depending on the UI version you’re on). Look for workflows, lists, custom reports, or even email personalization tokens that might still be referencing that property.
  2. If you’re using Marketing Pro or Enterprise, make sure it’s not buried inside a smart content rule or conditional logic somewhere.
  3. If you’ve checked everything and it still blocks you, the fix is usually to clone the property (with the correct field type) and then migrate your data and logic over to the new one. Painful, but that’s the workaround if HubSpot won’t release the lock.

Sadly, there’s no way to force a field type change once HubSpot sees it as “in use” — even if you’ve removed the visible dependencies. The system errs on the side of not breaking anything by accident.

Let me know what kind of field you’re trying to switch from/to — maybe there’s a cleaner workaround depending on the type (e.g., text to dropdown, number to calculated, etc).
Hope this works

Thank you for everyone’s suggestions

I managed to find the cause in the “Used In” tab; it turned out the field is being displayed on New Company screen. Upon removing it, I could then changed the name
