The why in your business is as important and maybe more important than your what and How. I run a start up business that deals on sales of used items, which also involves home and office sell offs. My new tagline seems to be more emotional and communications 'helping your used items meet a new owner" I’m currently rebranding and I definitely want to chip in the “why” in full force but I’m having a hard time figuring it out. Fellow content marketers, your guidance to discovering the why is needed. What would you advise ?
Hi @Greatnex !
Welcome to the Content Marketing Study Group ![]()
That’s a great question! Let me add a few fellow study group members to our conversation! Do you have any thoughts on @Greatnex’s question about discovering the ‘why’ in business? @DavidDennison , @DHuynh ?
Thanks for bringing in more people to my aid. I look forward to learning from their thoughts and opinions.
First things first, you’re going to have to come up with a rock-solid mission statement. Really sit down and hammer it out over a week or so. Fine-tune it, then fine-tune it again until it’s perfect. Once you establish a mission statement, you’ll be able to drive home the why fairly easily as you can build off that little paragraph for the rest of your content such as hero text and whatnot. This will also let you nail down your brand voicing.
With that being said, here are some brief examples that I hope will give you some ideas to run with:
1. We want to revolutionize the way people buy and sell used items, make it safe and easy to connect those who have items to sell with those who want them.
2. Working hard to make the sale of pre-owned products an experience that simplifies, not complicates, your life.
3. To innovate and revolutionize the way people think of, search for and share their unwanted stuff.
4. To improve the world through the power of re-use.
5. To keep items out of landfills, protect the environment and enable individuals to do good in their communities. (The force is strong with this one
)
6. To help bring communities together by bringing previously loved things into the lives of others that can use them.
7. To eliminate waste, help people discover new treasures, and build a better world.
These are some pretty strong statements that might be a little extreme, but they definitely put some why in there!
Thank you for tagging me @kvlschaefer !
