Ha! This happened just two months ago! I had a wife of a former client (now deceased) who asked if I could help her. At that point, I had yet to establish my new venture and the revenue would have really helped. I made a decision that the assignment was too far out of my lane. I could potentially made a very expensive mistake for her and ultimately for me. I referred her to others who were more qualified to do the work she needed. Desperation is not the right reason for taking on a client. The time I would have spent on the engagement would have been disproportionate to the revenue earned and the associated risk of potential malpractice. This is so common! You definitely had the right idea though, it saved you both from some future stress. I had this six months ago, when I onboarded a client to perform some consulting and administrative tasks for them to assist in hiring new employees under an EU-funded programme. The Labour Bureau, which was handling the case, started acting strangely and asking for additional documentation. The client had assigned a contact person to work with me and had paid a retainer.
