TBD Pricing for Hubspot Quote

We develop custom software and sometimes when we quote, we don’t yet have enough information to price out the implementation costs.

Does Hubspot CPQ allow you to put To be Determinied (TBD) instead of an actual price point? We want the buyer to see that Implementation has a cost but we don’t have the price point yet.

Hey @JWan1,

Thanks for bringing this to the Community!

Currently, I’m not seeing any options for this directly in HubSpot. That said, I encourage you to consider creating a post on our Ideas Forum here! Ideas posted in this forum are seen and reviewed directly by our product team regularly, and this is the best way to raise feature requests and increase the chance it will become a feature in the future.

In the meantime, I’d like to tag in some folks to see if they have any workarounds/ alternative options!

Hey @EugeneAtKiwi, @danmoyle, @MichaelMa -- Do you have any suggestions for @JWan1on this?

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Sam, Community Manager

Hey @JWan1 I’m going to +1 what @SamTassey says here. I don’t see it as possible currently, so the Ideas forum would be my advice. As for a workaround, I’ve not personally seen this use case so I haven’t advised on building one. But here’s what I’m thinking as a potential test. You could use a placeholder price + text label, adding an “Implementation” line item with a symbolic or placeholder price (something like 0.01, 1.00, or a representative amount) and then in the quote template override the displayed price text to “TBD” or “To be determined” in the description or a separate column. This keeps the implementation visible and signals that there is a cost, while the actual number is still there for HubSpot’s math.

Then you could hide the unit‑price column and call it out in the body copy. I believe you can configure your quote template to omit the price column for that line and instead spell out in the section text: “Implementation services – pricing will be determined based on project scope and will be provided separately.

And finally, use a custom “Estimate” product type. If you create a dummy “Implementation (Estimate)” product with flexible pricing, you could then handle the final number in a follow‑up quote or via a separate note/approval step outside of HubSpot CPQ.

If you really need to have a true “TBD” field directly in the line‑item table (no numeric price), I think you’ll need to extend HubSpot with a third‑party CPQ or quoting tool (DealHub, hapily, Quotivity, etc.), since native HubSpot CPQ is built around numeric pricing and totals.

I hope that helps get the brainstorming going!

Yes, HubSpot CPQ does allow some flexibility here. While you can’t directly use “TBD” as a price in a standard way, you can work around it by using $0 or a placeholder value and clearly labeling the line item as “TBD” in the description. Alternatively, custom properties or quote templates can be used to display “TBD” until the final pricing is confirmed.

Hi @JWan1. You’ll need to have a price on the line item, but I think you can accomplish what you want with some creative-but-simple tweaks on the quote template. If you can’t get what you want out of HubSpot CPQ, come check out Quotivity (my company). We support a ton of no-code quote template customization options — and still allow you to get into the code if you need to. We specialize in complex pricing and product configuration as well, and we’re exclusively built for HubSpot, so your reps will never need to leave.
