My organization has recently gone through a merger with another company that uses a separate system and structure for bringing in news subscribers or users who on opt-in. At the moment, to access content in our web domain, users must register for free accounts and configure communications preferences which are a part of the account creation process. Part of this registration includes users having to choose from more than 20 unique subscription types which represent areas of interest they wish to receive updates on via email.

The organization is now moving its email communications into the HubSpot platform and we want to optimize our subscription setup in HubSpot to keep the number of subscription types to a minimum.

If there are many categories of information an organization would wish to share, HubSpot advises the use of email lists or dymanic email lists as a subsequent level of more granular detail that live under a small number of subscription or opt in types. So, as an example, we might have an overarching subscription type for our membership program and then beneath that subscribers can select whether they want to receive the monthly newsletter, updates about a specific geography within that membership program, etc.

Has anyone implemented this by having a small number of subscription types and then creating dynamic lists tied to each subscription type to ensure we are only sending communications specific to the information contacts elected to receive?

If that is the case, how can contacts effectively ‘unsubscribe’ from one set of information without opting out of the entire subscription?

Hoping this makes sense without getting too complex!

That’s exactly what it comes down to. If you need contacts to be able to manage their preference for one stream of communication, one newsltter, one set of information, then it needs to be a separate subscription type.

Lists are only useful up to the point where you want to segment what a contact receives exactly within a preference. If you have 5 lists within 1 subscription type however and a contact wants to receive content from list 1, 3, 5 only, then there is no way for them to not also receive 2 and 4 - at least not if you’re relying on HubSpot opt-status related features (such as: HubSpot automatically excludes contacts who opted out from a specific subscription type when an email send of that subscription type is attempted).

Hope this helps!
