Hi,
I’m running into an issue with a split-payment quote in HubSpot and want to confirm whether this is expected behavior or a bug.
What I set up
I created a quote with 3 split payments for a total of $300:
- Payment 1: $100
- Payment 2: $100
- Payment 3: $100
This was not set up as a subscription. It was set up as a split payment option on a quote.
What happened
- The first payment worked correctly.
- The first payment created the first invoice and it was paid successfully.
- The payment schedule still shows Payment 2 and Payment 3 as upcoming installments.
What I expected
Based on the payment schedule behavior for split-payment quotes, I expected the future payments to create draft invoices for the remaining installments.
What actually happened
- No future draft invoices were created for Payment 2 or Payment 3.
- I manually created the next invoice for Payment 2 and associated it to the same:
- quote
- deal
- company
- contact
- payment schedule installment
- However, the manually created invoice came in as a draft with $0 amount, instead of the expected $100.
What I need help confirming
- For a split-payment quote (not subscription), should future installments automatically create draft invoices after the first payment is made?
- If so, why would those draft invoices fail to generate?
- When manually creating the missing invoice for a scheduled installment, should HubSpot automatically carry over the installment amount?
- Is there a recommended workflow to keep the quote payment schedule and manual invoices in sync when this happens?
Current account context
I’m on a Free portal with Commerce Hub Free and I’m a Super Admin with invoice creation/edit access.
Hi @v_consults,
Welcome to the Community!
Thanks for laying this out so clearly! Split-payment quote behavior with invoicing can get a bit nuanced, especially around whether draft invoices auto-generate for future installments vs. requiring manual creation. That said, I’d like to tag in some of our Top Contributors to see if they have any tips and tricks on this
Hey @danmoyle, @JWingate2, @BrandonWoodruff -- Do you have any suggestions for @v_consults on this?
Thank you!

Thank you @SamTassey for helping me look into this.
One additional detail that makes this especially confusing is that I cannot clearly see the 2nd and 3rd scheduled payments in the normal HubSpot UI, but when I inspect the records with Breeze, the scheduled installments do appear to exist in the backend data.
What I’m seeing now is:
- Payment 1 exists, shows $100, and is tied to the original invoice, which is marked paid.
- Payment 2 also appears to exist as a scheduled installment with the right value and a billing date of 2026-04-01, and it is now tied to a draft invoice I manually created out of concern of not seeing an “upcoming” invoice, and not being paid on the due date, as my client expects.
- Payment 3 also appears to exist as a scheduled installment with the 3rd split value and a billing date of 2026-05-01, but it still does not have an invoice number or invoice status populated.
From the results of the documentation searches I made, my understanding is that for a legacy quote with a payment schedule, once the first installment is paid, the remaining installments should be created as draft invoices . The docs also say those future invoices are not automatically sent and future payments are not automated, which suggests they should still exist as drafts before being sent manually.
My concern is that I do not want to manually create or trigger anything that could result in a double charge.
Hi @v_consults ,
What you are seeing is expected behavior, split payment quotes do not generate invoices for the installment payments. This is also a limitation with the free Commerce Hub in HubSpot. I would investigate subscriptions more if you are potentially looking to upgrade your commerce to a pro tier.
Hi @JWingate2, thanks for your answer.
I am wondering if the automated creation of draft invoices once worked, but there was a regression, or if there is a bug in the split-payments related workflow, given the system has metadata that shows the 2nd and 3rd scheduled payments exist in the data - I came here to prevent orphaned scheduled payments, and to confirm the intended design with draft invoices not being created as linked (which does not appear to be plan-specific.)
A nice chat with Breeze…
If I upgraded my subscription, I could convey this finding to Support, and hopefully Engineering - in the meantime, is there any way you can confirm whether this is “by-design”?
If this behavior is “by-design”, I would encourage an edit to the article covering this Legacy Quotes topic Create legacy quotes.
This article reads:
Add a payment schedule
Turn on payment scheduling to split payments over time, allowing you to split a total legacy quote amount into multiple installments over a defined period…
…you could structure this with a payment schedule into three payments over six months:
When collecting payment using HubSpot payments or a connected Stripe account , the first installment is payable through the quote and all other installments will be created as draft invoices.
6. When the buyer pays for the quote, draft invoices for future payments will be created. The invoices won’t automatically be sent to the buyer, and future payments won’t be automated. Edit the draft invoices before sending them to your buyer.
====
From an accounting perspective, IMO, a subscription is not a proper method for tracking a structured payment schedule to break down a line item or quote over multiple payments… I concur that subscriptions are best used for recurring charges for a line item or subscribed service/product.
Hi @v_consults ,
From my understanding, with the free version of commerce hub, it requires manual creation of invoices. Even after creating split payments.
I will also tag in @danmoyle to see if he understands if differently, but from my understanding this is something that could happen with a Pro or Enterprise tier.
Thanks! For what it’s worth, it would be good to know if this workflow was not only available but turned on automatically with paid tiers. Either way, the doc should be clarified, so Breeze guidance can be clarified.
