# Single Send API - Update Contact email address?

Hi folks! The Single Send API allows me to update aspects of a Contact record (such as first-name, last-name) as a side-effect of sending an email. Is it possible to update the Contact’s email address in this manner. Something like:

```auto
{
 "emailId": 2853049635,
 "message": {
 "to": "new-email@example.com" // NEW
 },
 "contactProperties": [
 {
 "name": "email",
 "value": "old-email@example.com" // OLD
 },
 . . .

```

I’m trying to avoid creating unnecessary new Contact records when a user changes their email address.

Hey @dairelynch ,

That’t a good question; it’s not possible to update a contact’s email property using the Single Send API. If you try, you’ll see an error like the following:

```auto
{
 "status": "error",
 "message": "Update (email@email.com) and property email addresses (otherEmail@email.com) must match",
 "correlationId": "12345",
 "requestId": "54321"
}

```
