Sequences: Why adds Gmail [Newsletter] to subject lines?

We use sequences to reach out to prospects. Recently, a prospect was OOO and we got an auto-replay back with the subject line:

“Auto reply: [Newsletter]original subject line”

It looks like it is being added automatically by the email program the prospect is using.

  1. Is Gmail adding its smarts filters to categories content and adding it to subject lines?
  2. Why are they doing it? Is it based on the content of the email or us as the sender? Or because we have an opt-out link.

We now have the discussion to not use HS sequences anymore if the email client adds auto-tagging to it.

Hi @SebScheuer,

This sounds like the IT department put a policy in place that automatically labels external emails and categorizes them. I’m pretty sure that changing the sales / marketing tool would not change anything about this. Unfortunately, there isn’t anything you can do about this either unless you want to contact the IT department directly and ask them to be allowlisted / excluded from this policy.

From the point of view of the IT department, this classification makes sense: It reduces risk, as employees are less likely to engage with content if it’s marked as promotional or suspicious. And if you want to be precise about it, the email is indeed promotional.

The only way to bypass this would be by sending emails without HubSpot tracking (or any other platform’s tracking) and even then there would be no guarantee that this label is not added. This filter / label might be triggered by the fact that it’s an external email address and that the email contains a link to a landing page.

To make a long story short: moving away from HubSpot is likely not going to change anything about this and it is common practice by enterprise IT departments to set up these labels. We just have to live with it.

Best regards!

Danke Karsten!
