The ability to search in Contact Lists either needs to include job title / all columns or it needs to be easier to access if this function already exist. There are some criteria that cannot be entered into list exports that you should be able to just search in the search box.
@HLloyd have you tried adding filters in the contact view to match your search criteria and list membership?

This is not a solution. You are searching in the Contact Database, not in Contact Lists. If you go to Contact in the upper left-hand corner and drop down, there is a selection for Lists. When you make a list, you can set criteria to pull the contacts you would like to under certain conditions you set. However, as with any search criteria, if you are too restrictive with your conditions you risk excluding data you want in your list. For example, we set job functions and as you would expect when searching for contacts using something as varying as a job function, some of the job titles are really specific and need further vetting than a general condition applied to a search.
When we’re dealing with a large contact database, why would I only want to search for names? That is undeniably the least important column in my contact list when establishing who I would like to contact. A cold email is sent based on industry, company, and job title / function and I don’t have the time to manually search by eye something I would expect to be a part of the platform.
@HLloyd I apologize for misunderstanding your original intent, I do know that contacts and lists are different, it wasn’t very clear what you were trying to achieve.
In Contact Lists, have you added the columns you are trying to search?
When I add columns for industry, company, and job title, I am able to search within those parameters.
That doesn’t work. If you read the response from Karsten Koehler, you’ll see they know it doesn’t work and they haven’t included the feature because it’ll slow down the app.
@HLloyd I stand corrected, I ran some tests and couldn’t use keywords from job title to find results via search from lists - this does work from the contact view, when using the filter for the list and it does allow you to export these columns. It is also possible to set criteria in a workflow where list membership = “your list” and job title contains “your keyword” and from there you can automate any number of actions for your teammate to take, without having to manually search from the list.
As @karstenkoehler also mentioned, I was only trying to be helpful in trying to find a working solution for you despite the current capabilities.

Job titles are very specific and also carry different meaning depending on company. For example, a Purchasing Agent at Pfizer will be sent a different email than a Purchasing Agent at Staples. This isn’t an exact comparison to the issue I’m having because these are clearly different industries, but my industry has many different company type subcategories that can’t easily be flushed out with inclusion / exclusion criteria even in Keywords.
The logical solution from my perspective is to remove the search from name columns and instead add it to the job title column because I can’t imagine anyone deeming the Name columns a relevant search subject. But I could be wrong on that as I am only aware of how my company uses the CRM.

You’re correct, it’s not possible to search for certain properties within a list. I believe that this is one of the considerations from the product team to keep HubSpot fast, as these types of real-time search actions across all fields would slow down the app.
To work around this, I would recommend using filtered views on the contact index page as @Jnix284 has explained. Under Menu > Contacts > Contacts click All filters, filter for List membership and set up an additional filter for Job title (or the property you’re interested in).
This is an extra step which you’re probably hoping to avoid but it is what it is.
You’re also referring to list exports and some data points which can’t be included in those exports. Could you specify this? Generally, with a few very select exceptions, you can include all contact properties in exports.

We have a team member dedicated to many things, but one of their responsibilities is managing our contact database and pulling lists for prospecting.
I don’t think searching Names in contact lists is a relevant search criteria. It is arguably the least important piece of data I could search for when I’m refining a contact list. Any personal connections of our sales team are designated under contact ownership, therefore making their names irrelevant. The only place a name is relevant is in the contact database itself. I can search for a specific contact in the database to make any changes or updates necessary. But that is not something I would do in Contact Lists.
