Resend with Exclude List

Howdy, folks.

I’m looking for a way to send a newer version of an email we previously sent (to correct some errors from the first send), but we want to exclude those contacts who have already opened the prior version so they don’t get it twice.

Specifically, we sent ‘version 1’ of an email to about 12K contacts in our list, and had about 1800 opens. I have already exported a list of the ‘opens’ from the first iteration of the email in question, but I’m not sure about the best practices for next steps.

Here’s what I had in mind:

  • Import the file of the 1800 opens into a new list named ‘Temp Exclude’, or something like that.
  • Send the new ‘version 2’ of the email to our global list, but use the ‘Do not send to’ function and select the ‘Temp Exclude’ list so that those 1800 people do not receive the email again.
  • Once the new send is done, delete the ‘Temp Exclude’ list so that it does not accidentally get selected in the future.

Is there another better way?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @robertkreisler

You could create an Active List that contains everyone that received your “Marketing Email” (Version 1).

Then, in Version 2 use the List as an “Exclusion” List as you described.

Personally, I keep Lists with a sensible name and date (e.g. “Email Version One Exclusion List 20220708”) so I can clean them out later (when I’m procrastinating).

Have fun

Mike

Mike, thanks for that.

Sounds lik what you’re suggesting is the inverse of what we need. We sent about 12K emails in the first round, out of which 2K were opened. We want to NOT send the next email to those 2K who opened.

What I’ve done is to export a list of the 2K opens, and I hope that by using that as an exclusion list, that the new send will go to 10K receipients who have not yet opened.

My other concern is field mapping for the imported ‘exclusion’ list. The file contains Hubspot User ID and other flags. Is the Email address alone adequate to exclude those 2000 from the new send or must I also map the Hubspot ID?

Hi @robertkreisler

You can create a list of all the people that Opened your Marketing Email.

But, be careful – with the improvements in privacy not all opens will be counted.

So, you could be resending the same email to people who have actually opened the email.

Personally, I rely on clicks as a measure of engagement – opens is less reliable.

Hope this helps

Mike
