Removing a Lead from the lead category

I have created a lead (contact) and a company. We closed / won the deal under the company but the contact is still listed as a lead. What do I need to do to remove them as a lead and have them listed as a client instead?

Hey @Jamieann,

Welcome to the HubSpot Community!

Great question! If the contact being a ‘lead’ refers to the Lifecycle Stage property, you’ll want to manually update that on the contact record, or set up a workflow to do it automatically when a deal is closed/won.

Hey @CarolinaDeMares, @EugeneAtKiwi, @rebeccatravels – do you have any additional advice you’d like to pass along to @Jamieann on this?

Thanks!!

Hey @Jamieann ,

If your contact is still listed as a lead in the contact’s Lifecycle Stage property, the articles that @stassey shared will help, specifically the Set up automatic updates to lifecycle stages section. If you go to Settings → Objects → Contacts → Lifecycle Stage → Automate, you’ll find a “Set lifecycle stage when a deal is won” option that you can toggle and select which Lifecycle Stage should be applied when a Contact is associated with a Deal in a “Closed Won” stage.

If you don’t associate contacts with Deals and want the Lifecycle Stage of a Contact to be updated when it’s primary Company moves to a different Lifecycle Stage, on the same screen you’ll find “Sync lifecycle stages” option to toggle (read more about it here).

If a “Lead” is defined differently, not via a Lifecycle Stage, you might need to create a workflow to change that property value when a deal is moved to Closed Won.

Also, on a side note, you can bulk update your existing records to move them to the correct stage to make sure all the right contacts are marked as clients.

Hi @Jamieann,

HubSpot has default automation that can solve for this - it does however require the contact to be associated to the deal.

Check Settings > Objects > Contacts > Lifecycle stages > Automate and you should see something like this:

If for some reason you do not want to associate the contact with the deal, the setting of the first checkbox should take care of that.

If these are currently enabled, consider enabling them and keep in mind that this would apply not just to this one deal but all deals. There are also ways to solve this through workflows.

Since you said “lead (contact)”, I assume you’re not referring to the lead object. In any case, that typically shouldn’t reflect the fact that a contact / company is now a customer. It’s a snapshot of the qualification before a deal.
