I recently ran a poorly-framed workflow that ultimately ended up unassigning contact ownership for thousands of records. So, basically, I have thousands of contact records that are now left without owners (unassigned).
I’m trying to rectify this by restoring the previous state. Is there a way I could construct a workflow to re-assign the previous contact owner to each contact?

Unfortunately there isn’t a “reverse” button or functionality for the kinds of changes, not just for workflows but in general. However, @jleow wrote a great step-by-step tutorial on how to revert bulk property changes which can be accessed here. It’s based on exporting historical values for property, in this case the historical values of Contact owner.
(I agree if you said that there should be an easier solution.)

Karsten: We’ve recently experienced a similar issue where thousands of contact owners were converted to No Owner. We need a bulk “reverse” to the original owner if possible.
