The ‘Company Name’ field on the contact is empty. Is it possible to automatically populate this from the ‘Name’ field on the Company object?

This can be done with automation (workflows), available in Professional and Enterprise subscriptions. You would create company based workflow and enroll companies by Name is known. In the first and only step of the workflow, you’d copy the Name information from the company record into the Company name field of the contact record.
In the free CRM this process can’t be automated, unfortunately. The Company name contact property is entirely separate from the associated company object and not affected by association either.
