Is there a reason why somethimes company records don’t automatically have a record owner?

Unless you set up an automation to populate the owner, HubSpot doesn’t do this automatically. There is a setting for company owner to contact owner, for example, Sync ownership between contacts and companies, but not the other way around.
In other words: If you’re not populating the company owner by creating the record manually, via integration, import or workflow, it’s empty by default.

I think the main reason is that you handle the company owner and the contact owner separately.
For some companies they divide the sales portfolio by company,
in others by opportunity and the company keeps without owner.
So if your company wants to sync company owner and contact owner
you can enable the setting that Karsten shared.
