Hi reader,

Requiring help around the topic of open rates. When I follow up with a prospect, I go through my inbound to find the email thread and reply from there. However, when I do this, Hubspot will record it as an “open email” even though it’s coming from my inbox.
Any way around this?

Seems like any email I open from my inbox is sending me a notification that “someone” opened the email and also registering as an “open”. Currently still using Excel to track the “Open/Click” rates of one contact in order to know if it was me or the prospect that had the activity.

Thank you,

---

Hi @KLama,

Thanks for reaching out to the Community!

Some email clients scan tracked emails in the background for security purposes. This may trigger an instant open notification from HubSpot Sales and also update the contact record. You can read more about this in this knowledge base article on [HubSpot tracking and logging](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/connected-email/understand-hubspot-sales-email-open-and-click-tracking).

This tutorial on “[Block self-open email notifications with the HubSpot Sales Outlook desktop add-in or Chrome extension](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/email-tracking/block-self-open-notifications-with-the-hubspot-sales-outlook-add-in-or-chrome-extension)” explains how to prevent these notifications.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Kristen

Hi Kristen,

Appreciate the response. Some of my colleagues and I cannot get the “Block self-open email notifications…” to work using the instructions provided.

To provide clarity on my initial question…

Day 1 Email to prospect: Open 0

Day 2 Email to prospect (responding to the first email as a follow up within the same thread): Open 1

When following up and staying within the same thread, Hubspot will track my own open to the sent email. Is there anyway for Hubspot to recognize that I’m opening the email myself? Thus, preventing this open notification?

Thank you kindly,

---

Hi @KLama,

Thanks for the additional details!

If you don’t want to receive open or click notifications for a specific IP address such as your own, you can block the IP address in your extension settings.

This [knowledge base article](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/connected-email/manage-your-hubspot-sales-extension-settings#blocked-ip-addresses:~:text=record%20in%20HubSpot.-,Blocked%20IP%20addresses,-If%20you%20don%27t) has instructions on how to block IP Addresses to prevent HubSpot from marking your self-open as an open from the contact.

I’d recommend having you and your team try out this to prevent these self-opens 🙂

Best,

Kristen
