Marketing email property types in HubSpot

I need to create a property on marketing emails to assign each email with a unique tracking code that links back to our event registration platforms. It seems at the moment, I can only create multi-select or drop-down select properties, not the single line text property I need.

Does anyone know of a workaround? Or is there a beta coming that will allow the full property types? I note that some of the HubSpot-created properties for marketing emails are single line text so not sure why I can’t make these myself!

(Can’t use contact properties because we don’t have enough available!)

Thanks in advance!!

Hi @EloiseFrancis,

You’re correct, for now, single line text marketing email properties aren’t supported - you can request this from the product team here: https://community.hubspot.com/t5/HubSpot-Ideas/idb-p/HubSpot_Ideas

I’m not aware of a workaround, no. This property type simply is not an option at this point.

Best regards

Hey @EloiseFrancis, is the purpose to track submissions from emails directly promoting that particular event? Not totally sure what you’re hoping to do, but curious to learn more, I might have some ideas.

We use external event registration platforms. When we send marketing emails, we insert a tracking code in the link to the registration page. We can then see where registrations are coming from in the registration platform.

I would like to set up a property for marketing emails so the teams can add in the tracking code (as single line text) when building their emails. Then we can associate contacts in HubSpot who have registered from those emails.

  • For example, lets say the URL used in the email is www.xyz.com/event123
  • We’d use the marketing email property, when building the email, to say this email uses event123 registration code. (Each individual email has a different code.)
  • Then with our API pulling registration data from the platform back into HubSpot, we can associate those contacts having converted from a registration from a specific email.

At the moment, we can only see contacts who have clicked the link in the email, but only in the registration platform can we see exactly which email they converted from.

This would give us better registration analytics within HubSpot, without having to go back into the registration platform.

Makes total sense, thanks for sharing.

Is your events registration API currently feeding data to HubSpot? What’s the integration like? I’m wondering if, rather than creating custom properties, you could import and update associated contacts automatically via API and save them as segments based on the tracking code. Or, if you could create a workflow that adds customers to segments based on filter critieria like delivered X email, clicked X email, registered for X event, etc. → add to segment as their activity data is synced with HubSpot.

No clean workarounds, I’m afraid.

Even if you were able to create single line text marketing email properties, you’d still be capped at 1,000 properties, which would probably happen quickly if you’re creating a unique tracking code for every email, across every event.

Thanks very much for your reply! Trouble is, we’re also running out of segments, so wouldn’t be able to create one for each email send! And we’re at 998 out of 1000 contact properties at the moment - I’d assumed that this limit was just that object type, and that we’d have room for other custom properties in other objects. But yes, you’re right, complex situation!

Yeah best of luck. Sounds like you might need to vibe code something, haha.

If you do solve this, please keep me posted, I’d love to see what you come up with.
