Lost Company Property Data After Deleting Contacts

We’ve recently imported contacts into HubSpot, and after finishing our use, we proceeded to delete them. HubSpot had automatically generated associated companies for these contacts, and we intended to delete these companies as well.

However, we encountered an issue: After deleting the contacts, all associated company properties such as Latest Traffic Source, Latest Traffic Source Data 1 & 2, and Original Source and Data 1 & 2 lost their data. This made it impossible to filter and locate these companies afterward.
Only by restoring the previously deleted contacts could we recover this crucial data and then successfully delete the companies. You can see it on the Screenshot that the data gets removed when deleting the associated contact:

Is this behavior intended by HubSpot, or is it a potential bug? I can’t see why this information should be removed when contacts are deleted, as it complicates the management and cleanup process significantly.

Hi @dominikportmann,

Yes, this is expected behavior, see the field definitions below: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/properties/hubspot-crm-default-company-properties

  • Latest Traffic Source: source of the last session attributed to any contacts that are associated with the company. This is set automatically by HubSpot based on the associated contacts’ most recent Latest Traffic Source value.
  • Latest Traffic Source data 1: additional source details of the last session attributed to any contacts that are associated with this company.
  • Latest Traffic Source data 2: additional source details of the last session attributed to any contacts that are associated with this company.
  • Latest Traffic Source Date: timestamp of when the latest traffic source occurred, based on associated contacts’ most recent Latest Traffic Source value.

Keep in mind that these fields above are meant to track the traffic source, not the record source. This means that especially for imports it’s not a reliable data point for segmentation / identification:

  • Record Source: how the company was created. This is automatically set by HubSpot.
  • Record Source Detail 1: the first level of detail on how the company was created. This is automatically set by HubSpot.
  • Record Source Detail 2: the second level of detail on how the company was created. This is automatically set by HubSpot.
  • Record Source Detail 3: the third level of detail on how the company was created. This is automatically set by HubSpot.

Lastly, if you want to access previous values of a field, you can always do so by exporting the property history: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/properties/export-property-history
