Lock colors to specific values in pie charts and dashboards in HubSpot

Today, when we build pie (and donut) charts in HubSpot, we can customize the colors for each segment/value using our brand kit. That works as long as all values are present.

However, as soon as a dashboard filter (e.g. date range) removes one of the values from the result set, the whole color mapping shifts: the “missing” segment disappears and all remaining segments move up one color in the palette. This makes the same category appear in different colors depending on the applied filters or time range.

This is very confusing for end users, especially for management dashboards where people expect:
- "Organic Search" to always have the same color
- "Paid Search" to always have the same color
- etc.

**Request**

Please add a way to “lock” colors to specific property values across a report (and ideally across a dashboard), for example:

- Map each value of a breakdown property (e.g. Original source, Lifecycle stage, Deal stage, etc.) to a fixed color.
- Keep that mapping stable even when some values are not present in the current filtered result.
- Reuse the same mapping across charts that use the same property, so colors stay consistent on the whole dashboard.

**Example use case**

We have traffic reports by Original source. We assign:
- Organic Search = blue
- Paid Search = dark blue
- Email Marketing = orange
- Social Media = red
- Direct Traffic = green

If in a given month there is no traffic from one source, the colors of all remaining slices shift, so “Organic Search” might suddenly appear as orange, red, etc. over time. That leads to misinterpretation in recurring reports and requires a lot of manual explanation and screenshots instead of live dashboards.

Hi @HKugler and Happy Friday!

Thanks for sharing your valuable feedback via a detailed example.

At the moment, HubSpot supports choosing colors for breakdown values within an individual report, but it does not provide a persistent, value-based color mapping that remains stable across filtered results and is automatically reused across a dashboard.

You can review the current report color options in HubSpot’s custom report builder documentation.

I’ve noticed a similar idea already present in our Ideas Forum: Enable Users To Customize the Colors and Legends Used In Data Visualizations. To contribute, you can upvote the existing idea and share more details about your specific use case in the comments.

I’d love to hear form our Top Experts: Hi @alyssamwilie, @elizheleva and @Josh can you think of a workaround to help with this, in the meantime, please?

Thanks so much and have a wonderful weekend!

Hi @HKugler,

I am not aware of any workarounds for this, unfortunately. I’d recommend upvoting the idea linked by @Berangere: Enable Users To Customize the Colors and Legends Used In Data Visualizations

Your other solution would be to use an external dashboard tool, like Databox.
