Hi! I was thinking of installing the HubSpot tracking code onto our platform to track prospects, and I am wondering if this is how I can create automated updates for the lifecycle property of my contacts.
I’d like for this property to update automatically to “customer” once a user signs up and logs into our platform.
Is this the right way to go about this? Or is there a better/easier way?
Thanks for the help!

Hi @JimmyAU,

This depends on what exactly constitutes a customer for your business – if you’re offering a free software product, someone using your platform might necessarily be a customer? In that case they are probably a marketing or product qualified lead.

Generally however, yes, if a registration for your product makes a contact a customer by your definition, than this approach would be correct.

If you want to update the lifecycle stage based on the sign-up for your platform, you’d have to make sure that this registration is in some way documented in HubSpot. This could be achieved using the HubSpot API endpoint to send form submission data: [https://legacydocs.hubspot.com/docs/methods/forms/submit\_form\_v3\_authentication](https://legacydocs.hubspot.com/docs/methods/forms/submit_form_v3_authentication)

You could either update the lifecycle stage of a contact directly with the form submission (passing on a value for the _Lifecycle stage_ property) or use a contact-based workflow in HubSpot to enroll contacts when they submit the form and then update the lifecycle stage to customer.

Hope this helps!

Hi @JimmyAU

I would echo @karstenkoehler’s recommendation.

I’ve worked with HubSpot customers in the past, the majority set conatcts who signed up for their free trial/demo as “Opportunity”. If in your case they become actual customers, it would make sense to change the lifecycle stage accordingly.

Cheers
