Lead Score Reset Doesn’t Actually Reset — Need True Reset or 0 Floor

We’ve identified a limitation in HubSpot’s Engagement Score tool that makes it difficult to support common lead lifecycle use cases, specifically lead recycling and re-qualification (e.g., MQL re-engagement).

Today, while HubSpot allows workflows to “reset” a score to 0, the score is immediately recalculated based on existing historical activity. As a result, the score does not truly reset — prior engagement is still factored in, and contacts can retain or quickly regain inflated scores.

In addition, score ranges are required to be symmetric (e.g., -100 to 100), which prevents setting a true minimum score of 0. This makes it impossible to implement a clean “start fresh” model for engagement scoring without introducing negative scoring workarounds.

This creates challenges for teams that need to:

  • Recycle leads back to marketing for re-nurture
  • Re-score contacts based only on new activity
  • Ensure MQL qualification reflects current intent rather than historical behavior

Current workarounds (e.g., subtracting points to offset prior score) are imperfect, as they:

  • Allow scores to go negative
  • Introduce artificial “penalty” behavior rather than true resets
  • Complicate reporting and interpretation of scores

Proposed Solutions

We would benefit from one or both of the following enhancements:

  1. True Score Reset Option
    • Ability to reset engagement score to 0 and ignore historical scoring events moving forward
    • Effectively creates a new scoring window for the contact
  2. Configurable Minimum Score Floor
    • Ability to set minimum score to 0 instead of requiring negative ranges
    • Ensures reset or subtraction logic cannot push scores below zero

Business Impact

These enhancements would:

  • Enable more accurate lead recycling and requalification workflows
  • Improve alignment between marketing and sales on lead readiness
  • Ensure engagement scores reflect current intent, not lifetime activity
  • Reduce reliance on complex workarounds and custom logic

This is a common need for teams managing longer sales cycles, nurture programs, and multi-touch engagement strategies.

Summary

HubSpot’s current scoring model works well for cumulative engagement tracking, but lacks flexibility for cyclical scoring use cases.

Adding a true reset option or a configurable minimum score would significantly improve the usability and accuracy of engagement scoring for many teams.

Curious if others have run into this — especially with lead recycling or re-nurture workflows.
