Is SEO just keywords?

Is SEO just giving keywords in blogs, page text, page titles, etc? What is going to work in the next version of the web. People are searching in different ways…

SEO involves more than just keywords; it includes technical SEO (site speed, mobile optimization), content quality, user experience, backlinks, on-page SEO (meta tags, header tags), local SEO, voice search optimization, and understanding search intent. Future SEO trends include AI, voice search, mobile-first indexing, video content, UX, semantic search, personalization, and visual search.

Hi @TateCarlson,

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has indeed evolved far beyond just adding keywords to blogs, page text, and titles. While those elements are still important, modern SEO is a comprehensive strategy involving multiple facets aimed at improving user experience, content quality, and technical performance. Here’s an overview of what works in SEO today and what is likely to be important in the future:

Current SEO Strategies:

  • Creating valuable, informative, and engaging content that meets the needs of your audience.
Using a mix of text, images, videos, and infographics to enhance user engagement.
  • Ensuring your website is easy to navigate and provides a good user experience. Mobile-friendliness is crucial as more users access the web via mobile devices.
  • Improving site speed and ensuring quick load times.
  • Implementing structured data to help search engines understand your content better.
  • Ensuring proper indexing and crawling by search engines.
  • Earning high-quality backlinks from reputable websites. Focusing on natural link building rather than manipulative practices.
  • Using keywords naturally within your content, titles, meta descriptions, and headers.
  • Utilizing long-tail keywords to capture specific search queries.
  • Optimizing for local search queries by creating local content and getting listed in local directories.
  • Managing online reviews and local business listings like Google My Business.

Future SEO Trends:

  • As more users adopt voice-activated search through devices like smartphones and smart speakers, optimizing for natural language queries becomes essential.
  • Focus on question-based keywords and conversational content.
  • Search engines are increasingly using AI to understand user intent and context better. Creating content that aligns with these advanced algorithms is crucial.
  • Understanding and leveraging tools like Google’s BERT and RankBrain.
  • Video is becoming a dominant form of content. Optimizing video titles, descriptions, and transcriptions for search engines is important.
  • Utilizing platforms like YouTube for SEO benefits.
  • Moving beyond exact match keywords to understanding the context and meaning behind search queries.
  • Focusing on metrics that measure user experience aspects like loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability.
  • Adapting to changes in data privacy regulations and focusing on building user trust.
  • Customizing content and recommendations based on user behavior and preferences.
  • Leveraging data to provide a more personalized user experience.

So SEO is continuously evolving, and staying ahead requires adapting to technological advancements and changing user behaviors. The key is to focus on providing value to users, ensuring a seamless user experience, and keeping up with the latest trends and best practices in the industry.

Hi Tate, SEO is not about just keywords, it depends on other factors as well. The good content is the most important factor of it. But, despite having good content, if your competitor also have good content, you need high quality backlinks to rank higher than competitor. Also, if your website takes more time to load than you competitors’, this factor will also take it down in SERPs. There are other factors too like mobile friendliness, generating high CTR titles etc… We are working on this website nowadays and we are applying strategies that are working successfully and increasing ROI.

SEO is just keywords… 20 years ago :slightly_smiling_face:

A website is just like a business.

Imagine you’re visiting a local store that sells dog food. If the store had the words “dog food” plastered everywhere—on the door, walls, carpet, shelf, doorknob, and even the staff’s clothing—wouldn’t that be off-putting?

In comparison, a reputable dog food company that provides a great store experience, a good location, proper management, polite staff, excellent post-purchase support, numerous good deals, and engaging content on social media. Even without explicitly stating that they sell “dog food,” people should easily remember that company as a top vendor to purchase from.

For a successful website, you’ll need to ensure a great UI/UX, proper information flow, authoritative content, excellent support, lots of activities on third-party sources (websites/social media), and many other factors. You can target a specific keyword, but Google can easily reward you with tons of other variations and long-tail keywords.

Best regards,

Abraham Ernesto

No, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is much more than just keywords. While keywords are an important component, effective SEO involves a wide range of strategies, including:

  1. On-Page Optimization: Ensuring that your website’s content, structure, and meta tags are optimized for search engines.
  2. Technical SEO: Improving site speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability, and security (e.g., using HTTPS).
  3. Content Quality: Creating high-quality, valuable content that answers user queries and attracts backlinks.
  4. User Experience (UX): Providing a seamless and engaging experience, which includes easy navigation, good design, and fast loading times.
  5. Backlinks: Building a network of quality backlinks from reputable sites, which boosts your site’s authority.
  6. Local SEO: Optimizing for location-based searches, important for businesses with a physical presence.
  7. Analytics & Monitoring: Continuously tracking performance with tools like Google Analytics to refine and improve your SEO strategy.

SEO is a holistic approach that goes beyond just using the right keywords—it’s about improving every aspect of your online presence to rank higher in search engine results.

SEO is much more than just adding keywords to blogs and page titles. While keywords are essential for search visibility, Google now prioritizes user intent, content quality, and engagement. Structured data, mobile-friendliness, and Core Web Vitals are also key ranking factors.

For example, I run a food menu website, and instead of just stuffing keywords like ‘Jollibee menu prices’, I focus on creating helpful, structured content with FAQs, schema markup, and internal linking.

As search behavior shifts with voice search and AI, understanding user intent and optimizing for conversational queries will be crucial for the next evolution of SEO.
