Is it possible to add a default value on a contact or deal property ?

Hi everyone,

I would like to know if it is feasable to add a default value on a property.

Let’s say that I would like to see if a contact has opt-in / opt-out something.

I would like to have “False” or “No” as a default value.

Thanks in advance,

David

Hi vandhemer,

Doing exactly what you want isn’t really possible, but here’s a potential workaround. The only issue is that this will only work if you have a property that is binary (i.e., it has only two options -- “yes” and “no”):

  • Click on your contacts
  • At the top of the screen, click on “Actions” → “Edit Properties”
  • On the next page click “Create a Property”
  • Name it however you wish (maybe “Opt-in?”)
  • In the “Field type” section, select “Multiple Checkboxes.” Click “Add an option” and in that option create the option “Yes.”
  • Finalize the creation of the property
  • Then go into your contact and click on “View All Properties” in the “about” section.
  • Search for your new value, and click “Add to About.” Arrange it as you want it to appear in the “About” section.
  • Then, back in the contact, you can either opt a contact in or leave the box unchecked, which would in essence be equivalent to a “no”
  • If you want to be able to see/sort this info quickly, just go back to the Contact view, click “Actions” → “Edit Columns” and search for the property you just created.
  • Select it, and arrange it as you wish. You can now quickly see anyone who is marked “Yes,” knowing that anyone without a Yes is automatically a “no”

The other thing you could do, if your options are not binary, would be to create the property as a dropdown. Then, you could create a workflow so that, whenever this field is left blank, it auto-fills with a certain option. (You would only want to do this if, say, that option is what would be selected like 90% of the time.) Then, the contact or deal owner would need to manually override this if it is ever incorrect.

If you added more Event types to the Workflow triggers (such as creation of a new contact), people could auto-configure any new entry.

This is a great idea. Does anybody know if this has been done?

Set default property values

What is it?

You can now set default values for properties in HubSpot. When creating or editing a property, admins can define a value that will automatically be applied whenever a new record is created.

Default property values are applied consistently across HubSpot—whether records are created manually, through workflows, or via APIs—so commonly used values are automatically set, saving users a step and keeping data consistent.

Why does it matter?

Many teams rely on the same values being set repeatedly when creating records. Without default values, this often leads to repetitive manual entry, inconsistent data, or complex workflows built just to fill in the blanks.

With default property values, you can:

  • Save time by pre-filling commonly used values
  • Reduce data gaps and “unknown” states
  • Eliminate workflow workarounds used solely to initialize data
  • Improve overall data quality and consistency from the moment a record is created

This makes record creation faster for end users and data management simpler for admins.

How does it work?

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings icon in the top navigation bar
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties
  3. Select an existing property (or create a new property)
  4. Click the Field type tab
  5. Set a default value for the property
  6. Once you’re ready, click Save (or click Create if creating a new property)

Once set:

  • The default value is automatically applied to all newly created records
  • Users can still change the value during record creation if needed
  • The default applies everywhere records are created, including via manual entry, workflows, and APIs

What’s not included

Default values are not currently supported for the following property field types:

  • Calculations
  • Rollups
  • Syncs
  • Files

Hello, I’m not seeing this option?

Hi @NWeisberg and welcome, it’s a pleasure to have you here!
Just to confirm, did you join the Beta for “Set default property values”? Once you join the Beta you should be able to see this option! Let us know.
Thanks and have a lovely day!
