Inaccurate industry enrichment = bad segmentation

Is anyone else having issues with the industry data enrichment on Companies not being accurate?

We deal almost exclusively with law firms and they are often mis-tagged as Consumer Services, Management Consulting, or Business Supplies & Equipment. I can understand how Legal Services and Law Firm might get used somewhat interchangeably, but I expect better accuracy beyond that.

HI @bgraham00! Thanks for posting your question to the Community!

Do you have a specific example of where the enrichment was not what you expected?

I look forward to hearing back!

Here are some examples…these are all law firms

Hey @bgraham00,

Thanks for the response! HubSpot’s enrichment data is pulled from Breeze Intelligence, so the accuracy can vary based on what’s available in their data sources for a given company. It may also be worth reviewing whether there’s any other sources overwriting the Industry values.

This KB article might be a useful starting point as well: Enrich your contact and company data

Hey @danmoyle, @Lnorden2, @elizheleva – do you have any suggestions for @bgraham00 on this?

Thank you!!

Hi @bgraham00

Thanks for the tag @stassey .

I unfortunately do have quite a bit of experience with this. I love all things HubSpot, but I will admit, Breeze Enrichment Data has let us down a few times.

We have seen Breeze Enrichments provide incorrect information on several occasions, things like Physical address and Domain inaccuracies were the most common.

I am unsure if Enrichments’ can be reverted now, but as of the last time I experienced an erroneous enrichment, reversion to the previous state was not possible in bulk and I had to manually correct every incorrectly enriched record.

I wish I had some better insights for you but unfortunately, I have not found a good solution other than not using the tool for anything I’m not willing to manually correct if needed at this moment.

Thank you,

Hey there @bgraham00. +1 for @Lnorden2’s confirmation here. Over the years the enrichment tool has gotten better, but it’s still hit or miss for some of my clients. The two things I’ve seen for workable advice are to preserve HubSpot’s enriched value separately, and to stop native enrichment from populating Industry. I’ll expand a bit.

The most defensible HubSpot-native solution is to create a dedicated property. Something like this:

  • Industry — HubSpot Enriched
  • Industry — Internal / Verified
  • Industry — Reporting
  • Legal Firm Type or Practice / Firm Category

Then you could map HubSpot’s enrichment output into the enrichment-only property, while retaining a separate, controlled property for the value your team actually uses operationally. HubSpot explicitly supports mapping enriched Industry into a custom company property; if it is a dropdown, its option labels and internal values must match the source options exactly.

This gives you an audit trail: you can see what HubSpot supplied, compare it with your own classification, and avoid silently corrupting critical segmentation logic.

You could then opt out of native enrichment populating Industry. HubSpot now lets you choose Do not fill any values for individual enrichment mappings. If the standard Industry value is doing more harm than good, I might turn off enrichment for that property and use enrichment only for safer fields such as domain, employee range, location, web technologies, or LinkedIn company page.

That is especially sensible if an incorrect Industry value can:

  • Put companies into the wrong nurture or outreach track.
  • Distort ICP fit scoring.
  • Trigger bad territory/routing decisions.
  • Make revenue and pipeline reporting misleading.
  • Cause broad audience exclusions or inclusions that are difficult to diagnose later.

HubSpot’s own documentation distinguishes automatic enrichment from manual enrichment: automatic enrichment fills blank values and does not overwrite values entered by a user or other system. That means a manually maintained/verified industry field can serve as a practical safeguard.

Not a perfect answer, but some things to think about. Hope that’s helpful!

I was apply a waterfall of different data enrichment providers. That way when one doesn’t properly enrich the others should. My preference is Lusha but there are other options as well.
