This is currently not possible, correct. As far as I know, the product team is working on allowing associations between records of the same object type but there aren’t any specifics yet, neither is there an announcement nor timeline.
Currently, the best workaround is creating a custom object (available in Enterprise subscriptions). Create custom object records
This is obviously not accessible to most customers due to the, for some, prohibitive pricing. In free CRMs, Starter or Professional portals, this is simply not possible at the moment.
