How to set a default Lead Status for new leads

Hello,

I know how can I caustomize my own lead statuses and I’ve done that for myself.

However, every new lead comes with blank lead status as a default.

How can I set exact lead status for every new lead as a default to avoid blank lead statuses?

I dont want to use Lifecycles, as for me it’s unnecessary to use these both.

Hi @MHobot,

This would require the automation capabilities for HubSpot which are available in the Professional subscriptions of HubSpot. In a contact-based workflow, you would enroll contacts, could then branch based on certain characteristics and assign them default lead statuses: Create workflows

In the free CRM, this is unfortunately not possible.

If you’re using forms to generate new contacts, you could follow these steps to log a lead status automatically: Pass contact property values with hidden form fields

Lastly, you can always adjust the create contact form to include the lead status if it’s currently not shown: Customize the create form for each object

Best regards!

Is it possible to make this with facebook lead ads integration?

It’s actually insane that HubSpot doesn’t set it as New automatically for every new lead! I know they retroactively say Lead Status is a sub-property of Sales Qualified Leads, but I find that explanation a bit weak, as it can be used for prospecting regular, not yet qualified leads too. It perhaps helps them sell 1-2 Professional hubs but in the end few people end up using this otherwise fantastic field.

Hello @MHobot,

This is now possible! HubSpot Login and Sign in

Set default property values

What is it?

You can now set default values for properties in HubSpot. When creating or editing a property, admins can define a value that will automatically be applied whenever a new record is created.

Default property values are applied consistently across HubSpot—whether records are created manually, through workflows, or via APIs—so commonly used values are automatically set, saving users a step and keeping data consistent.

Why does it matter?

Many teams rely on the same values being set repeatedly when creating records. Without default values, this often leads to repetitive manual entry, inconsistent data, or complex workflows built just to fill in the blanks.

With default property values, you can:

  • Save time by pre-filling commonly used values
  • Reduce data gaps and “unknown” states
  • Eliminate workflow workarounds used solely to initialize data
  • Improve overall data quality and consistency from the moment a record is created

This makes record creation faster for end users and data management simpler for admins.

How does it work?

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings icon in the top navigation bar
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties
  3. Select an existing property (or create a new property)
  4. Click the Field type tab
  5. Set a default value for the property
  6. Once you’re ready, click Save (or click Create if creating a new property)

Once set:

  • The default value is automatically applied to all newly created records
  • Users can still change the value during record creation if needed
  • The default applies everywhere records are created, including via manual entry, workflows, and APIs

What’s not included

Default values are not currently supported for the following property field types:

  • Calculations
  • Rollups
  • Syncs
  • Files
