With the new same object association why is there not a way to filter our contacts by “number of associated contacts”.
It’s not very useful to see how well this feature is being utilized if we can even build a report or list to show all contacts that have at least one associated contact.

Wait wait wait, you haven’t even heard solutions yet 
While there isn’t a default ‘Number of associated contacts’ out of the box, you can easily create this in a Professional portal, using a calculation property: Create calculation and rollup properties
