How to exclude contact who replied to marketing e-mails from e-mail sequences?

Hi there,

We’ve recently launched some e-mail marketing campaigns with several e-mails in each and I want to exclude contacts who replied to e-mail 1 and not spam them with the rest of the e-mails in the sequence.

HubSpot Support suggested that I collect the e-mail replies manually in a custom property but that will be a lot of a hassle and I’m looking for a more automated solution.

Have anybody found a workaround to this problem?

Thanks : )

Hello @tsveti_petrova,

Interesting use case! As you already have found out, replies to marketing emails are not tracked by HubSpot.

Is there any way that you can guide the email recipients attention to a call to action or link? If recipients tend to reply to emails, maybe you can place a mailto link in your email – because a click on this mailto link could be used as a workflow goal and would automatically unenroll them from the workflow.

Another option would be to think about your handover from marketing to sales/services. If a person replies to a marketing email, is the marketing team picking up this conversation or is a sales/services rep? Because if it’s the latter, you could unenroll them from the workflow as soon as the ‘Last activity date’ (note, call, sales email, meeting, task) is known.

Last but not least there is probably a way to leverage Zapier. For any email coming into an inbox matching certain traits, create a spreadsheet row. For any updated row in a spreadsheet, update the HubSpot contact and update a property which will cause them to unenroll. I haven’t tried this, I wouldn’t recommend it (because it seems high-maintenance and prone to error to me) but it is probably possible.

By the way, removing a contact from a series of emails is possible when using Sales Hub sequences, just as a side note.

Hope this helps!
