How to create a monthly Ads ROI report with YoY comparison?

Does anyone know how to create a custom report that shows Ads ROI on a monthly basis? I’d also like to be able to compare this data yoy.

While ROI is automatically calculated in Marketing > Ads for specific timeframes, it seems impossible to visualize this as a monthly trend over a longer period. The Ads Performance Metrics object cannot be joined with other objects (like Deals) in the Custom Report Builder, and creating a Dataset to bridge this gap hasn’t worked either.

Has anyone found a workaround to report on monthly Ad ROI within HubSpot?

Hey @lju

Yeah this is one of those gaps in HubSpot’s reporting that catches a lot of people. The Ads Performance Metrics object is pretty isolated and you cant cross reference it with revenue data from Deals in the custom report builder, which makes true ROI trending basically impossible natively.

The workaround most teams I know end up using is exporting the ads data and the deal attribution data separately, then joining them in a spreadsheet or a BI tool. Not pretty, but it works. If you have Operations Hub Pro you could also set up a scheduled workflow that calculates a monthly ROI value and stores it in a custom object, which then becomes reportable. It takes some setup but once its running you get the monthly trend line you’re looking for, and you can filter by year for the YoY comparison.

The more sustainable path honestly is pushing your HubSpot data into a data warehouse like Snowflake or BigQuery where you can join ads spend with deal revenue however you want. We do this at Stacksync for teams that hit these reporting walls, syncing HubSpot CRM and ads data into a database where you have full SQL flexibility for exactly this kind of report. But I know thats a bigger move, so the custom object approach might be worth trying first if you want to stay inside HubSpot. Hope one of those gets you closer!

@RubenBurdin Thank you for the response.

I’ve dealt with this same gap before. Ended up pulling the Ads and Deal data into Google Sheets (used Coefficient data connector) and building the ROI metrics there. If you want a head start, there’s a paid ads template gives you a clear idea of what’s possible to track and build. You can tweak it to fit your specific KPIs.

Since Coeffciient also connects to other data sources, blending wouldn’t be an issue. Once it’s setup & data is scheduled to refresh, you’ve got your monthly trends and can build out YoY comparisons without wrestling with HubSpot’s object limitations.
