How can I require campaign association for new contacts in HubSpot?

Can we make campaign association mandatory when a new contact record is created? The requirement is that every new contact must be linked to at least one campaign at the time of creation so that all contacts have a campaign source for reporting and attribution purposes.? Is this something possible in Hubspot?

Hi @Krishma, I hope that you are well!

Great question, thanks for asking the HubSpot Community!

Yes, with Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, you can make campaign association a required step when manually creating a contact in HubSpot.

This ensures users select a campaign before saving each new contact, helping you keep reporting and attribution organized from the start.

Here is how to proceed: Customize the create form for each object

I see that you don’t currently have the Marketing Hub, I’d love to hear from our Top Experts: Hi @danmoyle, @Edouardbrunetot and @EugeneAtKiwi can you think of a creative workaround to help @Krishma, please?

Thanks so much and have a lovely day!

Thanks @Berangere

Hey @Krishma , like Berangere mentioned with Marketing Hub Pro and above you could use Campaigns object (read more about Campaigns here) and require association with it when a contact is created manually via HubSpot CRM.

However, for a basic goal like to have all the contacts marked for propert attribution you could use just a custom property. You can create a property with a list of options to choose from and make it required on “Create contact” form. You can also use it in your import files or setup a workflow to set it automatically.

Also, HubSpot’s tracking code provides you with certain data in the Original and Latest Traffic Source property groups that can be especially helpful in combination with a workflow to set your custom property based on the values in those groups. And for clarification, there’s also Record Source property which will show you how the record was created but not necessarily the campaign.

So in Record Source, you’d see something like Forms or Import and the form or import file name in drill-down properties, whereas Original Traffic Source might show something like Organic Search or Paid Search and the name of the paid campaign.

Thanks, campaign association worked!

Also, re campaign, any way we could create one master campaign and some associated campaigns under master campaign?

Hey @Krishma and Happy Friday!

I’m glad to see that campaign association helped for you! :raising_hands: Also, thanks so much @EugeneAtKiwi for your insights, we appreciate it! :orange_heart:

Regarding your follow up question, I can see on this Idea " Parent-Child hierarchy feature for campaigns " that we have a public Beta for this “Multi-campaign reporting”. Here is how to opt an account into a Beta.

You can use folders to organize your campaigns, and you can create campaign hierarchies (i.e., parent/child structures) to manage your campaigns. From the folders view, you can, for example, select the “analyze campaigns” button to view all campaigns in your selected folder (and its respective subfolders). For that, you’ll need a Marketing Hub Professional or Marketing Hub Enterprise.

I understand that this is what you were looking for, is that correct?

Thanks and have a wonderful weekend!
