Help with updating existing records with multi-select properties when importing contacts

Hello!

My company frequently attends trade shows. That being said, I created a Trade Show(s) Attended multi-select property that could be imported or manually entered by sales staff.

After every show, I import our scanned leads from our booth. In our industry, we may encounter contacts that attend multiple of the same shows as us.

When I import the scanned leads, if the contact already exists, I want Hubspot to ADD the new trade show, not simply update it and delete and prior shows they had been marked for.

For example: I just imported a pre-show opt-in list. 10 members of this list had already been marked that they had attended TCI Expo '22. In the import file I just uploaded, I pre-set the trade show property as T&U Expo '23. When the list was imported, T&U Expo '23 was updated, but it deleted their history of TCI Expo '22. The screenshot below shows how I actually wanted them to import.

Could anyone provide guidance on achieving this desired outcome, either through adjustments in the import file or settings? I’m also open to reworking the format of the property if a different type would offer a solution.

Hi @EShoemake,

You can find step by step instructions for this here: Format import files

Hope this helps!

This looks like a way to import multiple values, however, when I am importing, I’m not importing two values— only one. I just don’t want it to override what is already in Hubspot.

Most of the time when I am importing a list from a trade show, I don’t know if they’ve attended other shows until AFTER I import and can see if they have any history.

Did you find any solution to this?

Hey @PPatel219 is there an issue with the solution provided? As outlined within HubSpot documentation here. if you want to add new values to existing properties without overwriting the existing values just add a semi-colon before the first value on your import.

Hey @EShoemake to ensure you append a value you just need to add a semicolon before the first value of the checkbox values, this will force the import to append the value instead of overwriting it.

This was perfect. Thank you TomM2

@PPatel219 did you ever find an answer here? I am dealing with the same issue and trying to find a solution.
