Guide me to learn and up-skill in Digital Marketing

Hi everyone, I am Amber. I am a high school pass out (Intermediate graduate) from Pakistan and homeschooled since middle school. Therefore, I have zero exposure, experience, and confidence in my skills and talent. I don’t want to end up as an average girl who cannot earn and afford and live her ideal lifestyle.

Thus, I am commencing my journey to learn skills and adapt to professionalism and productivity. My biggest goal is to achieve financial freedom and break through traditional expectations holding me back. My very first step is to learn digital marketing, freelance, or find remote projects or work to save up for my higher education.

And for that to happen, I need your support and guidance. Any sort of guidance you can give me is very valuable to me. As someone with zero self-belief and no understanding of how to practically use the knowledge provided here, you can help me. How do i maximize my understanding and retain everything I learn. How do I use this knowledge to land projects and build my portfolio?

Hi @Amber7,

Welcome to the HubSpot community! If your first step is to learn digital marketing, I’d recommend this free certification course by HubSpot: https://academy.hubspot.com/courses/digital-marketing - this will teach you the fundamentals and, depending on your interests, you can then complete other certification courses by HubSpot, such as Social Media, Content, Inbound, Advertising.

If you go through the materials and complete more of them as you go, that’ll help with your self-belief.

Regarding the practical aspect, the courses sometimes include exercises. However, you could also feed some of the course information into the AI of your choice (ChatGPT, Claude etc) and use a prompt that generates exercises for you. This is repeatable process that you can complete until you feel more confident in the topical areas.

A prompt could be:

You are my personal HubSpot and digital marketing coach.

I’ll provide a transcript from a HubSpot certification course. Based only on the key concepts and skills covered in the transcript, create exactly three practical exercises to help me apply what I’ve learned:

  1. Simple — Practice one or two core concepts.

  2. Medium — Combine several concepts in a realistic marketing scenario.

  3. Advanced — Solve a more complex, realistic business problem requiring strategic thinking.

For each exercise, include:

  • Scenario

  • Objective

  • Instructions

  • Deliverable

  • Success criteria

Make the tasks hands-on rather than asking me to simply recall or summarize the material. Do not provide the solutions.

After I submit an answer, evaluate it like a coach: explain what I did well, what I could improve, give me a score out of 10, and provide a stronger example where useful.

Happy learning and good luck!

Hi Amber,

First, I want to say that the fact you are actively looking for skills, guidance, and a better future already puts you ahead of many people. Lack of experience at the beginning is normal — skills, confidence, and professionalism are built through consistent practice, not something people are simply born with.

Since you are starting with digital marketing, I would suggest focusing less on trying to learn everything at once and more on building small practical projects.

A good approach could be:

1. Learn the fundamentals first
Understand how marketing works: customer journeys, buyer personas, content strategy, SEO, email marketing, social media, analytics, and CRM concepts. Tools are important, but understanding the reason behind using them matters more.

2. Practice while learning
Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Create your own projects:

  • Build a simple website or landing page
  • Create a mock marketing campaign for a fictional business
  • Practice email sequences
  • Analyze a company’s marketing strategy
  • Create sample social media content

These projects become the beginning of your portfolio.

3. Use HubSpot Academy
HubSpot has excellent free certifications that can help you build structured knowledge. Complete the courses, but more importantly, apply what you learn in real examples.

4. Build proof, not just certificates
Clients usually care more about what you can do than how many certificates you have. A small portfolio showing your thinking, strategy, and results will help you stand out.

5. Improve confidence through consistency
Confidence usually comes after taking action, not before. Start with small goals: learn one concept, apply it, document your work, and repeat.

Also, remember that coming from a non-traditional education background does not define your future. Many successful professionals built their careers through self-learning and practical experience.
