Filtered Email Events retrieved via API

Hello,

I was hoping someone could help me better understand what the filtered email events entail (filteredEvent field in email events data) and why they are not included in HubSpot email reporting in terms of Opens / Clicks. Based on this article, it seems that HubSpot is flagging some of the events as bot activity (opening email to check to see if it is malicious). We do have the flag set to filter bot activity in our HubSpot instance. I’m curious about this topic as I was reviewing an email that was sent out to ~37K recipients on 6/1/2022. I’ve found that we are not including ~8-9K recipients that ‘opened’ the email as the open events are marked as a filteredEvent = True and I also noticed that the dates the events occurred on range from 6/1 to 6/9. Could someone help me better understand how HubSpot determines that the event was generated by bot activity?

Hi @MSims3,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community!

I’m not an expert in this field, but I’ve checked our documentation and found the following information: the filteredEvent property is a boolean representing whether the event has been filtered out of reporting based on your reporting settings. The filter reasons are controlled within the Tracking & Analytics settings in your HubSpot account: bot filtering toggle and excluded IPs (please check the linked Knowledge base article for more information). We also filter traffic from known crawler IP addresses.

If you’d like to dig deeper into bot filter reasons, I recommend to reach out to our support team, who can look into the detailed send reports for your email campaigns.

I hope this helps!

Cheers
