Email Newsletters and Categories

Currently when we send out a newsletter from Mailchimp, we create a single newsletter and assign each of the article links and descriptions to each of the Newsletter categories to use dynamic content (smart rules), then we send a single newsletter to all of our contacts which are subscribed to at least a single category and they will receive a single email with that content. If a person has subscribed to multiple categories, they will see all of that content in a single email.

When we started creating a test newsletter we wanted to send to some contacts, we had to create each newsletter category as a Subscription Type (so that people could update their subscription preferences) from the link in the email. Then I set up active lists to allow smart rules to be applied.

When we came to the point of sending the newsletter, we were unable to send it, as it required us to choose a single subscription which we want to send the email to. We want to send the email to multiple subscriptions, because otherwise we will need to generate an email newsletter per every single category and send 5 or 6 newsletters every time, which also means that every contact who is subscribed to more than one newsletter category, will receive multiple emails. This will then pretty much guarantee them unsubscribing from us as we are flooding them with emails.

Is there a way to send an mailshot to more than a single subscription? or any other work arounds?

Hi @KSurkus ,

In terms of being able to select more than one subscription type for an email, there is no workaround for there - so you will always have to select a single type.

However, there is a way to send one single newsletter with content that varies based on subscription type. You could create active lists in HubSpot based on the criteria of “subscription type” and then utilize smart content based on list subscription. Smart content lets you customize content based on either list membership or lifecycle stage in the same email.

Hope this helps -- if it did, please help the community by marking my answer as a solution!

Hi Whitney,

Thank you for your response, but we also got to the same idea. Unfortunately it doesn’t help us, as we have to provide users with a list of 5 or 6 subscriptions which they can manage themselves, but our generated newsletter will contain smart content and will only show news to what they have subscribed to.

In this case we would have to send 5 or 6 separate emails, each to the subscribed list of people, who might be also subscribed to multiple topics.

It is getting quite irritating that these simple actions which we have been doing for years are not easily implementable or actionable on HubSpot, especially as smart content is there.
