Email Marketing and Subscription Types

Hello! I apologize in advance if this is very basic or has been addressed already!

A little background - my company has been sending out emails to our contracted partners for quite some time using HubSpot. The emails are generated by lists of people based on the type of partnership they have with us. Those lists are managed in HubSpot using a contact property type.

Should they have been using Subscription types all along to handle the marketing emails that were being sent out? I’m trying to find the correlation between the two and how they interact with each other since I just created an “Opt-In” for our newly contracted partners.

I started about 6 months ago, just taking over for the person who was doing it all along and I just implemented an opt-in email where our new contracted partners were sent emails upon signing of the contract, and then they click to confirm their email opt-in.

Any advise is appreciated!

Thanks!

Brittany

Hi @BTomjanovich,

Subscription types are meant to be a way for contacts to choose what kind of communication they would like to receive from you. Standard subscription types are for example marketing information, product information but could also be event information, a weekly newsletter etc. The idea is that contacts can subscribe to one but unsubscribe from another.

With GDPR settings and ‘legal basis required’ enabled, HubSpot will check for you whether there is a legal basis for sending a given contact an email or not. For example, if a contact provides their ocnsent to receive marketing information but not the weekly newsletter, HubSpot could perform this check before sending an email and potentially hold back the weekly newsletter, should that contact accidentally end up on the recipient list.

You’re saying that you dividing your communication by partner status. If partner statuses mutually exclude each other, I’d say that a property is a good solution. It wouldn’t make sense for a contact to be opted-into communication meant for multiple partner types, would it?

In that sense, subscription types wouldn’t provide any additional benefit. You should be fine with documenting an overall marketing communication opt-in which you then segment by contact type in the background.

You wouldn’t lose any functionalities by switching to subscription types. However, there is some work that will multiply, e.g. after importing contacts, and there is more room for error, e.g. accidentally selecting an incorrect type in a marketing form. Complexity in your portal will be higher but you won’t gain much from it – at least based on the information that you provided.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for your help and clarifying that! Makes perfect sense, and glad to know we weren’t going about it completely wrong.

Happy to help, @BTomjanovich! It looks like you marked your own post as a solution. If you could also accept my post as a solution, I’d appreciate that. Have a wonderful weekend!
