Duplicate leads in Sales Workspace

When we manually create new leads in the Sales Workspace and connect them to a contact, Hubspot creates a duplicate of that lead on the same contact, automatically naming it [contact name] YYYY-MM. Sometimes the lead is assigned to the owner of the original lead, sometimes to another rep (not necessarily the contact owner - no logic there either).

Not every lead triggers the creation of a duplicate and I haven’t been able to figure out why it happens, but we’d very much like to turn it off as it floods the workspace and confuses our reps.

The only solution I’ve been able to find is to create leads from the contact view instead. This doesn’t seem to trigger the creation of a duplicate. But when using this method, Hubspot automatically names the lead [contact name] YYYY-MM and we can’t give it a custom name, which makes it hard for reps to get a quick overview and take action.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

Hi @Lykhans,

Have you checked your workflows that are creating records – to see whether an automation is creating these leads?

Another potential reason could be that the created lead updatese the lifecycle stage of the contact to SQL – and you have the setting enabled that SQLs trigger the creation of a lead (Settings > Objects > Leads).

Could you check and report back?
