Defining My SEO Goals

As a development communication specialist, I know that setting clear, measurable goals is essential for understanding whether my SEO efforts are truly making an impact. Simply saying “I want to rank 1 for a keyword” doesn’t give me enough insight into whether my audience is actually finding, engaging with, or acting on my content. By defining goals and attaching numbers to them, I’m able to measure real progress and adjust my strategy based on evidence, not assumptions.

For my website, I first think about the larger purpose behind my communication work—creating awareness, shaping narratives, reaching underserved audiences, or driving meaningful engagement. From there, I can set actionable goals. For example, I may decide that I want to increase organic traffic so more people can access vital information. I may aim to increase leads, such as stakeholder inquiries or sign‑ups for development programs. If my audience is largely mobile‑first, then designing a mobile‑friendly website becomes a priority to ensure accessibility. Or perhaps my goal is entirely different—like improving engagement on key educational resources or strengthening my site’s authority in a specific thematic area.

Whatever the objective, defining it clearly helps me evaluate whether my SEO is contributing to real-world communication outcomes, not just higher rankings.

Among others, improving my website performance starts with speeding up pages by optimizing images, reducing heavy scripts, and improving core web vitals to boost search rankings and user experience.
