How do you define mailing / newsletter subscriptions in the context of marketing?
Hi @freb,
The most important thing about subscription types is that they should give contacts a way to opt in or out of specific types of communication.
So it is explicitly not about mapping internal segmentations there, such as by language, sub-group, etc.
As a rule of thumb: it is always better to have fewer subscription types. Many subscription types increase complexity.
It is also important to avoid typical mistakes, e.g. storing consent to data processing as a subscription type.
For most HubSpot customers, it is sufficient to maintain one general marketing subscription type per business unit (often there is only one).
If there is a clearly defined, additional, regular newsletter format, that would be a second one.
If you describe your marketing to me in more detail, I can be more specific.
Best regards
Hi Karsten,
thank you for your reply.
We would like to implement the following:
- A monthly newsletter for all contacts who have opted in to receive news on the relevant topic.
- Product-related mailings (news) as needed, sent to contacts who have been assigned the attribute “interested in topic XY.”
Our question: Do we actually need subscriptions, or can we create a mailing list of contacts based on the assigned attribute(s)?
Best regards and thank you
for your support,
Barbara
@freb in that case, I would recommend a general marketing subscription (for useful content, product-related info, etc.) and one for the newsletter.
As for whether you need subscriptions: Yes, at least one. It’s not possible to send emails without a subscription type. Whether you use segments in the background to determine who receives the newsletter and who doesn’t is definitely an option and up to you.
See my previous answer: Subscription types are primarily there so that contacts can unsubscribe from, for example, the newsletter on their own, without automatically being unsubscribed from all emails.
