Not sure what the confusion is here. I am a new user. Here’s what I did:
1. Create a custom property called “Tag” (single line text)
2. Add the property to my view
3. Insert tags for Contact separated by commas
4. In my Contacts list, choose “More Filters” and type “Tag”
Hi guys, this thread is one of the reasons that I started building HubTags - contact tagging for HubSpot.
It allows you to tag contacts and run searches/filters using those very same tags.
I just started but it would be great to get your input/feedback if you want to try it. More details here: HubTags

Checking in from 2021. Tags is one of my most loved features of Active Campaign - and adding custom properties is definitely not the same, and cannot be used like tags in a smooth and efficient workflow. For two years, your users have been calling for this feature - do you not care? All other CRM systems have tags.
At this stage the solution provided by @Phil_Vallender is still relevant and tagging the way you want to is not available, I’d recommend upvoting and subscribing to this Idea so you can receive a notification if the status of the idea changes in the future.
Seriously? No tags? I switched from Copper to Hubspot because of the many features Hubspot had… only to I realize that not having tags is s HUGE problem. How has this not been added yet? I’m sorry but anyone who says that properties is the same is just wrong. Especially when it take 3 menu systems just to figure out how to create them!! Trying to organize different sets of clients, companies etc using properties literally takes a huge chunk of time when I should just be able to add the tags I want instantly and filter them quickly. “C’mon man!” (via Biden)
Hi @ARollins6, I feel your pain on this one.
I’m working on a HubSpot tagging system: HubTags. It’s basic at the moment but it does get the job done. I would happily have you as a beta user if you are interested.
Cheers,

I did add a Custom Field to both Contacts and Companies called “Tags”.
I populated that single field for each given Contact with any of the schools we had spoked at over the past 5 years (basically, the tag looked like “2018 - Denver”)
As everyone already knows, the Search box in Contacts does not search that column, and with multiple tags, you really can’t sort it either.
SO…
I went into Lists (bottom of stack below Companies and Contacts).
I created a list called “School Attendees”
I set it up as an Active List so it would keep capturing updates
I selected Contact Properties and chose the custom “Tags” field from the list of all available Contact fields
And then for the query I chose “Contains Any Of” and picked 2 of the school tags I had entered into that custom Tags field on Contact records (e.g. “2018 - Denver”)
Then I hit “Save” in the upper right corner of the screen.
Since it is Active and dynamically looking for updates, it took a little while to build (20 seconds? not instantaneous)
Voila - there it was - I had effectively built an active filter list for Tags.
I set up a different list for Companies to ensure I could do the same thing - which it did to some degree - but as someone else pointed out, you can’t see the Contact tags for the Associated Company (nor is Associated Company sortable even if it is on the list).
So, while this isn’t exactly what I wanted, it is a LOT closer to having the ability to use Tags in some rudimentary way… and I didn’t have to burn up the very limited “10 Custom fields” allowable.
I hope this helps any of you who have posted above.
But let me say that while I’m happy I have this capability, I too want to see TAGS capability added to Companies and Contacts so I don’t have to go through this process.
Adding to the chorus. Having tags would be immensely helpful for sorting Contacts. Creating too many custom properties gets cumbersome and confusing, and they don’t translate well between Contacts and Companies. Other CRM systems offer this; we’re considering switching to a platform that offers this. Please consider creating an update.
Any news on this? It seemed there was some enthusiasm and traction, with the suggestion that the Hubspot team might work on introducing the Tagging facility.
I’m guiding my colleague who is getting on board and importing a lot of contacts and we’ve been discussing how we will be using the Contacts CRM, and the topic of tags has come up a few times. I had set up a custom property named ‘tags’ to preserve historical data imported from other CRMs eg Insightly, but introducing a proper Tags feature to quickly add an open, ‘on the fly’ self-organising function would help.
Many thanks!
I am also thinking of transferring from Nimble, and lack of tags is most likely a deal breaker. It may be something that might make us go with Zoho. Before any decisions are made, could you let us know if there is any progress on this and if this feature is going to be implemented?
Disappointing to see that more than 6 months after the Community Manager’s acknowledged the widespread request for this feature which comes standard with almost all other CRMs, still there is no progress. We were considering moving from our current CRM to HubSpot and adding the bells and whistle of HubSpot Marketing and HubSpot Sales but without tagging it would be impossible - it would set our workflow and targeting back 10 years.
I’m pretty surprised they haven’t implemented tags either. I guess you can create custom properties each and every time, but it would be nice to have a built-in solution for this.
It’s a bit remarkable that the Hubspot team has so little understanding of the value of tags. That is why they are integral to pretty much every CRM system. We typically use tags to keep track of things like how we connected with the contact. If they came through an event, if they are based in a region rather than isolating to a specific city (especially in places like Los Angeles, where there are dozens of cities in a greater metropolitan area), the vertical specificity not just the industry they sit in, etc. Things that are easier to lump into tags rather than creating 50+ custom fields.
Considering the CRM has been around for about 4 years and hasn’t implimented tags is surprising.
I agree 100%. One of the key things I would like is a way to identify the principal contact at a company. Prospects get moved around and since there are multiple contacts tied to a single company, having a way to identify the main players/decision maker quickly would save time in trying to reconnect when someone new takes over.
I am new to SalesForce and HubSpot and am already seeing shortcomings in the platform from a record segmentation standpoint. I have used other small business CRM’s that utilize Tagging almost like a #Hashtag is used on social channels. The idea is to give users the freedom to mark leads and contacts in a way that allows for quick targeting and segmented list builds. This would be a powerful tool that doesn’t seem like it would be that hard to implement.
I am also evaluating Hubspot right now, and would like to see tags implemented. I am pretty sure the closest comparable feature is static lists, which can function like tags, at least for contacts. I have used marketing automation tools that use both methods, lists and tags, and agree that tags are more useful.
Lists feels more 90s/database and tags feels more social/current.
