Hello!

I am wondering how I can move a contact from one list to another without losing any data that has been assoicated with that contact. I will be using different lists for different marketing innitiatives. If a prospective client ends up signing a contract with us, we will not want to be marketing them the same way as before.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi @RNelson12,

Typically, list membership itself shouldn’t be the information. It should be a result of information stored on the contact record.

For example: an active list filters for all of the contacts who meet certain geographic segmentation criteria. By updating the contact record accordingly, a contact will enter the list or not.

The contact leaving the list does not mean the information is gone – you can still find it on the record itself. It’s just that they’re not a member of the list anymore.

I see very often that HubSpot users manually maintain static lists. In this case, the list membership itself is the information – which, in my opinion, is not a good idea because of the exact reasons that you mentioned. A contact leaving the list means that the information is gone.

Active/static list comparison: [Create segments](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/lists/create-active-or-static-lists#types-of-lists)

In other words, make sure to use default and custom properties to maintain information on your contact records, about your initiatives for example:

> **[Create and edit properties](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/properties/create-and-edit-properties)**

> Learn how to create custom properties manually or using Breeze. Also learn how to edit or clone existing custom properties.

> **[Edit a property value for a record](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/update-a-property-value-for-a-record)**

> Learn how to edit property values within an individual record such as contacts, or projects. Also learn about bulk editing via segments or index pages.

Information about signed contracts should be ideally managed through deals: [Create deals](https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/create-deals)

Contacts can also be filtered and segmented based on the information stored on associated deals.

Let me know if that answers your question!
