Contact Limit Error - 37,500 Limit Exceeded But Only 36,600 Contacts Visible

Hi HubSpot Community,

I’m experiencing a contact limit issue and need help resolving it.

Issue:
I keep getting the error “Can’t create another Contact. This portal has exceeded the limit of 37,500” when trying to import new contacts.

Problem Details:

  • My portal shows only 36,600 active contacts
  • The system reports we’ve exceeded the 37,500 contact limit
  • There’s a ~900 contact discrepancy between visible and system-reported counts
  • I’ve already deleted 100+ contacts but the error persists
  • No active integrations that would sync extra contacts (Apollo, Salesforce, etc. are disconnected)

What I’ve Checked:

  • Visible active contacts: 36,600
  • No obvious duplicate records
  • Attempted to find and delete archived/deleted contacts

Questions:

  1. What could account for the 900+ contact difference?
  2. How can I find and delete archived/soft-deleted contacts that might be consuming the limit?
  3. Should I contact HubSpot support to request a limit increase or investigation?

Any help or suggestions appreciated!

Hi @Madhav21,

This is a very strange limit - if you’re on the free CRM it is much lower. In that case, I’d recommend being happy with the current limit and not poke around further.

If you’ve deleted all restorable contacts, then no, there isn’t another hidden layer one can clear via the UI.

If you’re on a laid subscription, yes, HubSpot support is the correct path.

Best regards
