Considerations when adding sales stages to pipeline

We are incorporating a new sales methodology into our sales strategy. With that, we are likely updating the sales stages we currently use. We’d like to keep using the same Sales pipeline while making these changes. Are there any considerations I should keep in mind when making these changes?

Hi @EMcGrath,

Yes, a few things:

  • HubSpot automatically stores the date of a deal when entering each stage. ‘Old’ deals will not have dates populated for new stages.
  • Deal funnel reports historically only show conversion rates for deals that have moved through all stages. ‘Old’ deals will not have moved through the new stages. (PS. This is changing and funnel reports will soon have the ability to show conversion rates even when deals skip stages.)
  • When you’re making changes to deal stages, make sure to only rename stages if the new name has the same meaning as the old name. Otherwise, you’ll also have to think about moving deals between stages, potentially backward, making things more complicated.
  • Keep in mind that ideally all deals should go through all stages. If the typical deal would on a regular basis skip stages in your pipeline, that’s a sign you should rethink how you’re structuring stages.
