Yes please, much needed!
Agree. I can’t use as is.
This would be super useful
Glad this has been submitted - we honestly thought there was a bug in HubSpot as this is a no brainer when it comes to calculations.
Much needed! Trying to SUM all marketing activities to calculate the # of touchpoints.
+1, can we please make this happen?
Hey folks, came across this thread while also finding a solution for my client.
HubSpot just released an advanced formula editor for calculated properties 2 weeks back, and it helped me to find a pretty amazing solution! This is a better alternative in my opinion, instead of multiple workflows to set 0 for each input field if they are null.
How it works
Within a calculation property, I’m able to use an if() and is_known() function to basically check if the field is null and if it is, populate with 0.
* Do note you need to create a new property to see the “advanced mode” toggle and start using this editor.
The end result:
The calculation field essentially computes a final value, even if 1 or more input fields contains null:
This is just one of the many use cases the new feature unlocks, since the formula section allows you to format booleans (true/false) or strings (text).
Link to the knowledge base article section on this feature.
Hope this helps someone out ![]()
31 May 24: Updated the formula & screenshot as a team mate has kindly pointed out that we’ve since updated the function to is_known()
thanks Rwong
do you know how to add a condition in that “If this condition is true, we will calculate this property.” deal stage = closed won from a specific pipeline?
+1
thanks @rwong, that works well.

or more advanced function to convert null value to zero works as well. → Just realised Rwong had the solution!
1. Use the complex formula editor
2. Write the formula as if(is_known(Maybe_Blank_Property),Maybe_Blank_Property,0)
Happy to Help
Not sure if people are still encountering this, but with custom caculated properties, this should be considered resolved! Simply add the below if and isknown pieces to the equation lik this “if(is_known([property])&&true,[property],0)” to your equation to get around this and avoid using workflows for this. Hope this helps!
Hubspot.
You need to recognize that the current formula builder is too limiting to users in too many instances. Directing users to instead use a workflow for an arbitrary calculation that should be handled on the property level is just bad experience.
Like - Sure you have nested IF and you can use AND or OR in between arguments, but you have such basic level function available, and you can’t condition for when the property is inherently blank, so your function like is_known() cant’ be used.
Hubspot could up the ante by looking at how Salesforce does it, they have MUCH better toolkit for the custom formulas, e.g. CASE, like shown here,
Their available functions and operators just simply outshine what Hubspot has - simple as that.

Definitely needs looking into. Surely it’s logical for it to work this way
Please can this functionality be added, HubSpot? It’s a common and normal requirement for any calculations.
God **bleep** this is dumb and frustrating. It’s like they never actually tested any of this stuff before they rolled it out! Frustrating beyond all heck!
You can create a workflow to do this.
Go to “Workflows” under the “Automations” tab on the left side bar of HubSpot.
1. Create a new workflow from scratch
a. Choose the type of property you want to edit. (I chose “Company-based” because my property pertains to a company)
b. Choose “Blank workflow” and continue.
2. Create a trigger by choosing a property and criteria for it to meet
a. Choose Group 1
b. Choose trigger type “When filter criteria is met”
c. Choose your option under “Object Information” (mine is “Company Properties” because the property I need to edit is a Company Property)
d. Choose the property you want to edit.
e. Change “Is equal to” under Edit Criteria to “Is unknown”
f. Click “Done” and “Save” next to the Enrollment triggers bar.
3. Create the action
a. Click the “+” under the trigger enrollment box in the workflow diagram. (It is above the “⚐ End” box)
i. It should say “Configuring”
b. Click “CRM” and then “Edit Record”
c. Select the same property under “Property to Edit”
d. Enter “0” in the “Choose a value” box
e. Ensure the “Clear existing property value” checkbox is NOT SELECTED.
f. Click “Save” by the Edit record tab.
Voila! It should look like this screenshot below. Now review and publish the workflow. I wanted this to update all of the companies with this property so I selected “Yes, enroll existing companies” when I published.
