Confusion about "Company Owner" property meaning in HubSpot

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an issue I’ve encountered with my team regarding the “Company Owner” property in HubSpot.

When assigning a company to a team member, their name appears as the “Company Owner” in the record. However, several team members asked me why they were listed as “owners” of the company. This led to some confusion, as they thought the term referred to the actual ownership of the company rather than their role as the person responsible for managing the company’s record in HubSpot.

While I understand that “Company Owner” is intended to indicate the person responsible for the record, it seems that for users who are less familiar with HubSpot, the terminology can be misleading. Perhaps something like “Record Owner” or “Assigned Representative” might make the purpose of this property more clear.

Has anyone else experienced this confusion? How have you clarified this for your team?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Hi @CarlosMOS,

You’re correct: The “Company Owner” property is just meant to show who’s responsible for managing the company’s record, not who actually owns the company. It’s a simple idea, but the wording can throw people off if they’re not familiar with it.

The label of the property cannot be changed in HubSpot, it is deeply embedded in many processes. That means that communication is key in this regard. It helps to talk these things through as a team. Having a quick chat or creating a guide to explain what the key properties mean can make a big difference.

Here are a few things that you could point out in your internal communication an onboarding materials:

  • When using the field (clicking onto it and checking the selection), only users of your HubSpot portal ( = employees of your company) can be selected. The inability to select someone external should make it clear pretty quickly that this means something else than owning the company entity.
  • Sharing the standard HubSpot resources can help. This will also help generally better understand the concept of ownership in HubSpot.

Hope this helps!
